The Health Sciences Academic Building (HSAB) at the University of Iowa is a pivotal addition to the campus, designed to accommodate the growing needs of the College of Health Sciences. Part of a comprehensive 10-year master plan to modernize the University of Iowa Hospital, HSAB represents a significant urban project. It provides state-of-the-art learning spaces that support the university's top-ranked programs and its ability to attract and retain leading students and faculty. Spanning seven stories, the building incorporates three distinct stair towers and a robust structural framework, featuring more than 10,000 shipping pieces, large-scale embed plates, and heavy plate girders.

One of the most notable structural features is the intricate design at the North-east corner of the building. This area includes a horizontal truss that experiences significant axial reactions, requiring complex and heavy-duty connections. The teamwork and expertise of our engineering team were crucial in addressing these challenges, supported by the advanced capabilities of SDS2 software, which streamlined the modeling and detailing processes. The software efficiently managed the design of intricate nodes and connections, enhancing the feasibility of the project despite its complexities.

Collaboration among our team members was a cornerstone of the project's success. Over ten individuals worked simultaneously, utilizing SDS2 to enable real-time communication and synchronization of efforts. This facilitated the prompt resolution of issues and the integration of client-supplied 3D architectural and ducting models with our structural models, identifying and resolving conflicts early. SDS2's intelligent connection design feature significantly reduced modeling hours and produced clean, precise drawings, optimizing time and manpower.

In response to the client's request for project monitoring options, we set up cloud access to remotely monitor the entire project, providing real-time visibility into project progress. This proactive approach fostered trust and transparency, ultimately strengthening the client relationship. The combination of our team's collaborative efforts and the advanced capabilities of SDS2 were critical to successfully executing the HSAB project.

We're excited to share the successful completion of a steel detailing project of a paper products manufacturing facility. This project was both challenging and rewarding, showcasing our team's expertise and dedication. Here's a detailed look at the key aspects of this project:

Our team meticulously maintained all shear and moment loads according to the design drawings. We utilized SDS2 software to automate and submit detailed calculation files for the structural designer's review, ensuring precision and adherence to design specifications.

The project involved galvanization, requiring us to model and detail each vertical brace claw angle connection as break-apart. This presented unique challenges that our team expertly navigated, ensuring all connections met the stringent requirements for galvanization.

This project included numerous miscellaneous parts, particularly platforms that needed to coordinate seamlessly with the main structure. We efficiently managed these components, detailing handrails and stairs using the SDS2 Automated System connections, ensuring a smooth integration with the main structure.

Girts played a significant role in this project. We successfully detailed all primary and secondary girts using SDS2 software's Girt member option. This ensured the structural integrity and stability of the building framework.

One of the notable challenges was managing the er****on direction and sequencing. With the help of the newly introduced erector order option in SDS2, we were able to sequence the er****on process effortlessly, ensuring a smooth and efficient construction phase.

This project is a testament to our team's capability to handle complex steel detailing tasks with precision and expertise. We are proud of our work and look forward to tackling more such challenging projects in the future.
