NWSLMS Pre-Race Story Motorplex at the Mill

Event: The Northwest Super Late Model Series presented by RaceCals (NWSLMS) will visit the Motorplex At The Mill (ID) for the first time in series history on June 29th for the "Western Mountain Inc. 150". The new 1/3-mile paved oval held its first event on October 14, 2023, which included Pro Late Models, Modifieds, and Legends. This will be Round #5 of the 10-race schedule for the NWSLMS. The Pro Late Models will take center stage on Friday night.

Championship Standings: Kasey Kleyn has a comfortable lead in the championship standings heading to the “Motorplex” with 212 points. Ken Bonney sits second in the standings with 166 points. Christopher Kalsch (151), Dave Garber (144), and Andy Beaman (133) make up the top-five. Eric Rhead (110), Evan Goetz (103), Haeden Plybon (101), Zach Riehl (99), and Jess Havens (87) make up the top-10. Kleyn is scheduled to miss one event in 2024, due to a conflict in his schedule, but he has not finished worse than second in 2024.

Rookie Standing: Eric Rhead has taken the top spot in the Rookie-of-the-Year standings after four events. Rhead has 110 championship points to his credit. Evan Goetz (103) sits second with Jess Havens (87), Andrew Riehl (76), and Scott Murphy (75) the top-five. Rhead was a regular in the now defunct Rocky Mountain Challenge Series, where he has three victories and won the 2014 series championship.

Diverse Field: 16 teams are currently on the entry list for this weekend’s action representing five states. Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Colorado, and Utah will be represented this weekend. Five teams will make their 2024 season debuts including Nickolas Cooper, Skip Taylor, Jeff Hillock, Dylan Caldwell, and Dan Lowther.

Winners: Kasey Kleyn and Kyle Tellstrom are the only previous NWSLMS winners entered for this weekend’s action. Former Super Late Model touring series winners include Jeff Hillock, Andy Beaman, Eric Rhead, Kleyn, and Tellstrom.

Still Counting: Christopher Kalsch will make another start in the NWSLMS on Saturday, stretching his record streak to 42 in-a-row. Kalsch hasn't missed an event since 2018 and grabbed his first top-five finish at Hermiston Raceway in Round #4 of the season series. He sits a career best third in the championship standings. The Mechanical Engineer is a former Yakima Speedway Super Late Model champion.

Series Debut: Nickolas Cooper will make his NWSLMS debut this weekend in a Vandoorn Racing Development Super Late Model owned by Kevin and Melissa Steinke. Cooper and the Rocky Mountain Motorsports team finished as the Spears SRL Southwest Tour Series Rookie-of-the-Year Runner-up in 2023, finishing fourth in points overall. The team is excited to debut with a new series this weekend, as well as at a new facility in the Pacific Northwest, as they make their way from Colorado.

“The entire RMM team is excited to head to Idaho to compete in the NWSLMS”, Cooper stated. “We hear great things about the series and have always wanted to race at one of their events. It is not every day that new tracks are opened and often times it is the opposite when you hear of a great race facility closing! When we heard of the great facility John Wood was building, and that the NWSLMS had the venue on the schedule, it seemed like the perfect opportunity.”

Event Sponsor: Ryan Phipps will make his second start of 2024 with the NWSLMS, with the help of Preston Peltier. His company, Western Mountain Inc. (WMI), is the title sponsor for this weekend’s event. WMI is a company with its’ concentration of services in the energy industry. After coming off a Pro Late Model win at Meridian Speedway (ID) a week ago, Phipps is excited to head to the “Motorplex”, to combine both business and pleasure this weekend.

“I've loved racing since I was a kid”, Phipps stated. “I've been very blessed in my life to be able to live a dream to race. I respect and appreciate all the folks and the series. I was approached by Mr. Garber about sponsorship of the event. I was happy to be able to do it. I raced at the facility and it's a very cool place to race. I’m very thankful to be involved in the series.”

Mr. Versatile: Kyle Tellstrom has had immense success in Modifieds up and down the West Coast. He has branched out to have additional success in Sprintcars, Midgets, Pro Trucks and a championship in Super Late Models. The 2023 winner of the NWSLMS “Apple Cup 125” will now look to add to his win tally at a new facility in the Lee Hackney Super Late Model.

“Making your first trek to a new track is always exciting, let alone a brand-new facility”, Tellstrom began. “From what I have heard, it has a ton of grip, and the turns are tight. It’s a totally different facility than most of the worn out (surfaced) tracks that the “Tour” has been running on more frequently. I’ve been fortunate to run at a good number of racetracks in my career. I feel one of my strengths as a driver is quickly adapting to new conditions. Even though “The Mill” is 40 minutes down the road for me, I’ll hit the track Friday night like most and should be up to speed in a handful of laps.”

Schedule: Admission Gates open at 3:00 PM (MST) on Saturday June 29th. Single car qualifying begins at 4:00 PM for the Mini Stocks, NASCAR Modifieds, Northwest Tour Trucks, and the Northwest Super Late Model Series, in that order. Opening Ceremonies are scheduled for 5:15 PM. The Main Events will be run in the following order: NASCAR Modifieds Main #1 (35 Laps), NWSLMS “Happy Minutes” (practice), NW Tour Trucks Main #1 (35 Laps), Mini Stocks (50 Laps), NASCAR Modifieds Main #2 (35 Laps), NW Tour Trucks Main #2 (35 Laps), NWSLMS “Western Mountain Inc. 150”.

Versatile Kyle Tellstrom Visits “The Mill” With the NWSLMS

Spokane, WA – When it comes to winning on the short tracks of the Western United States, there are few divisions that Kyle Tellstrom hasn’t won in. The Modified star has branched out into other divisions, displaying his talent up and down the West Coast. Tellstrom will now attempt to win his second Northwest Super Late Model Series presented by RaceCals event, this time at the recently opened Motorplex At The Mill in Emmett, ID. The “Western Mountain 150” will be Tellstrom’s third start in the series and second in 2024.

“Making your first trek to a new track is always exciting, let alone a brand-new facility”, Tellstrom related. “From what I have heard, it has a ton of grip, and the turns are tight. It’s a totally different facility than most of the worn-out tracks that the “Tour” has been running on more frequently.”

Tellstrom was the 2020 North State Modified Series champion, having scored 10 wins in 23 career starts. He has five victories in just seven career Speed Tour Modified Series starts, as well as four victories in the Spears Modified Series. Continuing with his open wheel success he has two wins in the Speed Tour Regional Sprintcar Series, as well as a win in the NSRA Sprint Series. The versatile racer even has a championship in the USAC Radical Focus Midget Series, earning three wins in nine career starts.

In full fenders, Tellstrom was the Speed Tour Super Late Model champion in 2022, winning three of the five events he attended. He never finished outside the top-two in those starts. He added another victory in 2023 in three series starts. He added that championship to his Meridian Speedway (ID) championships in 2018 and 2019 and grabbed his first NWSLMS victory in the “Apple Cup 125” at Tri-City Raceway RMEC in 2023. For good measure he added a win in the Northwest Tour Truck Series in 2019.

Tellstrom’s versatility, and experience at a variety of tracks throughout the West Coast, will surely help the former Ukiah, CA resident at a track he has never seen before.

“I’ve been fortunate to run at a good number of racetracks in my career”, Tellstrom explained. “I feel one of my strengths as a driver is quickly adapting to new conditions. Even though “The Mill” is 40 minutes down the road for me, I’ll hit the track Friday night like most and should be up to speed in a handful of laps.”

The “Western Mountain Inc. 150” will be Round #5 of the season series for the Northwest Super Late Model Series presented by RaceCals. Colorado Star Nick Cooper Makes Inaugural NWSLMS Start at the “Mill”

Spokane, WA – Nickolas Cooper is coming off a Rookie-of-the-Year runner-up campaign with the Spears SRL Southwest Tour Series, finishing fourth in the overall championship standings. He opened his 2024 season at Irwindale Speedway (CA) in the “All-Star Showdown 125” with a seventh place run at the ½-mile oval. Cooper and the Rocky Mountain Motorsports (RMM) team will now switch gears and make their first start in the Northwest Super Late Model Series presented by RaceCals at a brand-new facility. The Motorplex At The Mill will host the team on June 29th in the “Western Mountain Inc. 150”, Round #5 of the NWSLMS 2024 schedule.

“The entire RMM team is excited to head to Idaho to compete in the NWSLMS”, Cooper stated. We hear great things about the series and have always wanted to race at one of their events. It is not every day that new tracks are opened and often times it is the opposite when you hear of a great race facility closing! When we heard of the great facility John Wood was building and that the NWSLMS had the venue on the schedule, it seemed like the perfect opportunity.”

The two-time Colorado National Speedway (CO) Super Late Model championship runner-up finished the 2023 SRL season with five top-10 finishes, with a best finish of fourth at Irwindale. He continues his partnership with team owners Kevin and Melissa Steinke and the Rocky Mountain Motorsports Team in their VanDoorn Racing Development Super Late Model. Cooper is a former Rocky Mountain Legend Racing Association champion and has three career Super Late Model wins at the highly competitive Colorado National Speedway, after competing as a rookie in 2021.

The Severance, CO racer is excited to team up with Sigler Distributing for his effort on the 29th. The company was seeking to put on a summer event for its’ Carrier and Bryant dealers, and next weekend’s tilt proved to be a great opportunity for the company, based out of Boise, ID.

“It just so happened that the great folks at Sigler Distributing wanted to put on an early Summer event for all the greater Idaho Carrier and Bryant dealers, so the opportunity arose to lean on the NWSLMS schedule to identify such an opportunity”, Cooper announced. “Our RMM team is proud to represent Sigler Distributing with the Carrier and Bryant brands and look forward to heading to the Northwest part of the country!”

The “Western Mountain Inc. 150” will be Round #5 of the season series for the Northwest Super Late Model Series presented by RaceCals. Ryan Phipps Heads to Inaugural NWSLMS Bout at the “Mill”

Spokane, WA - Coming off a win at Meridian Speedway (ID) in the Pro Late Model division, Ryan Phipps will head to the Motorplex At The Mill (ID) on June 29th for the “Western Mountain Inc. 150” for the Northwest Super Late Model Series presented by RaceCals. The Burley, ID driver will see his company’s name on the race title, as he makes his third start in the series, having finished 17th at Findlay Stadium Stateline Speedway (ID) in May.

With the momentum from his win at Meridian, Phipps is still philosophical about his expectations heading to the Motorplex, leaning on something he learned years ago from an author, coach, and speaker.

“I learned something about expectations”, Phipps began. “I was at an event with Tony Robbins, and he said, "Trade expectations for appreciation and your whole world will change." I do my best to live like that. I just look forward to racing there again and having fun. I'm lucky to have great people helping me race.”

With the help of Preston Peltier and Jonathon Gomez, Phipps has done a little travelling, as of late, participating in events such as the “Chilly W***y 150” and the “Turkey Shoot 125” at Tucson Speedway (AZ), where he finished eighth last November. Peltier will be making the trip with Phipps on the 29th, hoping to better that mark, and improve upon his third-place finish in May, in the Motorplex’s Pro Late Model event.

Phipps’ company Western Mountain Inc. (WMI) will provide the primary sponsorship for next weekend’s event. It will combine both his business interests and passion for racing into one event.

WMI is a company with concentration in services to the energy industry. They specialize in construction for oil and gas, industrial and utility maintenance, and project work, which provides the basis for their services to customers. WMI also provides consulting to energy partners for assessment and improvements to assets. WMI operates throughout the United States, servicing a broad range of clients, with corporate offices in Idaho and Energy Services office in Pennsylvania (WMI webpage).

The “Western Mountain Inc. 150” will be Round #5 of the season series for the Northwest Super Late Model Series presented by RaceCals. It will take place at the Motorplex at the Mill and will be the series’ first visit to the new 1/3-mile paved oval in Emmett, ID. Additional details will be announced in the following week.

For those unable to attend, the event will be show LIVE on Racing America with a subscription to the service.

Attn: Series drivers planning to run the Montana 200 at Mission Valley Super Oval!

Polson is a resort town at the south end of Flathead Lake. This 2-Day event is right during their peak season.

We recommend securing your lodging reservations as soon as possible. There are a few hotel/motels, and probably vacation homes and Airbnbs near Polson.

There is dry camping at the track, with some cute little areas a bit from the pit area, but away from the hustle and bustle of the track. We'lll try to post additional info as we have it.

If anyone has suggestions, please mention them here.

If you have any questions, let us know!
