Louis Armstrong (1900-1971) was known for fathering jazz music, however lesser known for his ma*****na memoirs and love for the plant. He was a regular cannabis consumer and is thought to be amonst the first proclaimed medical ma*****na users.

Armstrong had a big role in bringing cannabis into the pop culture space. He was an activist and was jailed multiple times for cannabis over the course of his life.

During the height of his carer, he was famous in music circles for his cigar-sized joints. However, publicly he would state that he stopped consuming cannabis due to his run ins with the law. Armstrong called cannabis “an insulator against the pain of racism."

Armstrong called himself, and others who smoked cannabis, “vipers.” He commonly, and affectionately, referred to cannabis as “the gage.” During the recording of “Laughin’ Louie”, composed in 1993, he made the whole band smoke before playing. He was known for always smoking during his recording sessions, which produced some of his best work. Jack Bradley, a friend and photographer of Armstrong, said “his nickname ‘Pops’ comes from pot. It’s because he was the father of ma*****na.” In an unpublished autobiography, he wrote 1,500 words about his favorite smoke.

Armstrong loved the “warm feeling” of cannabis and the community among smokers. It also helped him overcome shyness he felt offstage.
