It is with great sadness that West Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department announces the passing of retired firefighter Ancil George Bell (F424). He passed away at his home on august 8th 2023. George joined the fire department on December 9th 1987. George loved the fire service and quickly became the training instructor for the department. He was happiest showing the young new recruits how to run the trucks or spray water. George learned to whisper in a sawmill. If George was on a fire scene there was never any doubt where he was. You could hear him giving orders or showing someone how to do something over any other noise on the fireground. He was instrumental in the design and construction of the current fire station in West Lebanon. He personally completely rebuilt the first fire truck West Lebanon owned which is a 1936 Dodge that is still in use for parades and other duties.

Confidence in strong to severe storms today is highest along and north of the I-74 corridor, but we cannot completely rule out storms further south. The strongest storms could produce damaging winds, large hail, and perhaps an isolated tornado. Stay weather aware today!
The Warren County Commissioners have lifted the Burn Ban that has been in effect.

Warren county is in the process of changing from the CodeRed notification system to the Rave system. If you have the CodeRed mobile app I believe you can still get weather notices from NWS as long as the app is enabled on your device, but the Warren county initiated message portion is down as we begin to transition. Keep an eye on this page in upcoming days to get the registration information as we transition to the Rave product.

Expecting strong Thunderstorms this afternoon.
MODERATE DROUGHT STATUS for many now.
The drought monitor map came out today and it's not good as expected. See attached. The category is moderate from Kokomo and Tipton to the west and southwest.
This might be helped a little by a system on Sunday.
That has a decent chance for some decent rain. I am worried the smoke issues will affect things though.
We can go from 42 to 82 all in one day much like Arizona, Nevada or New Mexico weather! Sweaters for some to shorts in a few hours. This dry air and dry ground will that much like those states. It heats up fast and cools off even faster.
This has been quite a weird week with various things.
The headlines are scary at best and the weather is right up in there with some of them...drought, fires, el nino.
Add in the scenes from New York and other places that look so eerie.
The scenes from NYC from the smoke and fires had some reminded of 9/11 even.
The good news for us is that the wind will shift some and the worst of the smoke should tend to ease up this week.
It won't be gone but some better.
The trends are hopeful tonight that we will see more chances for rain moving forward vs weeks on end of nothing.
Tonight--Clear/smoke, cold for June again, 43 to 47.
Friday--Sunny/some smoke, 79 to 83.
Saturday--Starting off at 55 then sun/clouds, very warm, 83 to 87.
Sunday--As of now, off and on rain around and some storms
later. Highs will be near 74 depending on breaks in the rain.
Monday--Spotty shower, sun/clouds, windy, fall like, 70 to 73
but feeling like 60 to 65! That will be due to Sunday's cold front.
Tuesday & Wednesday--Sun/clouds, highs 81 to 84.
We should turn more hot and more humid by the end of next week with some more storm chances that weekend a week from this week.
We have had a scary number of accidents and tragedies in our area this week. It's a daily thing and most of it is preventable.
I saw a person pass just before a small hill and was too late starting to pass and almost hit someone head on. Another person told me they had someone pass 2 semi's in front of them and then the first truck had to slow down fast to let the ignorant offender back over to prevent a head on wreck...which could have caused a chain reaction of the two trucks and the person I talked to following behind.
Someone else said they think that many people don't even know what a double yellow line means vs. one line. Scary thoughts.
Be safe out there.
Here is that new drougt monitor map. The brown to the left is the moderate category and the yellow is "abnormally dry." Keep in mind that was as of Monday so by now the whole state is probably in the brown category...
Here's a current look at construction going on across the state. Plan ahead before setting out, and download our Trafficwise app or visit 511in.org for all the latest roadway information.
