B.E.A.C.H. Co-founder Suzanne Frazer interviewed by Annalisa Burgos on first Sunrise Hawaii News Now Saturday program this morning discussing the new Statewide balloon release ban that was initiated by B.E.A.C.H.

Hawaii's new law banning the intentional release of balloons statewide began today. BEACH initiated and supported the passage of this law with the help of a petition signed by over 1500 people. This is the strongest balloon release ban worldwide as it doesn't allow for "biodegradable" balloons and bans any number of balloons from being released. Banning balloon releases helps protect marine animals and birds from one of the most lethal types of plastic marine debris. When helium filled balloons rise into the air to about 8km they brittle fracture - burst with strands hanging off which look like the tentacles of jellyfish and squid. All species of sea turtles are known to eat jellyfish and sea birds such as albatross eat squid. When marine animals and birds mistake balloons in the ocean for food, they can die from blockages and starvation. Balloons being soft are unable to be moved through the digestive system and are the marine debris item most likely to kill. It would be great to see other places around the world follow Hawaii's lead and ban balloon releases to save lives.

We’re going beyond beach clean-ups to stop the problem of plastic marine debris at the source. We are raising funds on GoFundMe to pay our Marine Debris Research Assistants who are helping with translation and identification of marine debris. We will use the data we are collecting in order to find solutions to this environmental disaster that is affecting the ocean and marine life. Please help us raise $12,000 by end of July 2022. To donate use the link in our bio. We appreciate your help too with sharing this message. Thank you for supporting our organization’s work.

Good news! B.E.A.C.H. was granted permission to install Hi5 recycle bins at Hawaii State Boat Harbours on O’ahu! The wire bins made by our interns and volunteers were installed at Haleiwa and Waianae Boat Harbours and Moanalua Bay Boat Ramp. Additionally, we replaced our recycle bins with new ones at Hawaii State Parks as well as Honolulu City Parks (the ones where we have permission). A total of 100 Hi5 recycle bins were made and installed in order to prevent marine debris by providing a dignified way for people to get HI-5 recyclables without having to go through the garbage bin.

Success! Gov. Ige signed HB1102 into law. Act 141 bans intentional balloon releases throughout the State of Hawai'i. The law goes into effect on 1/1/23. This is the strongest ban on balloon releases in the U.S. Act 141 protects sea life from one of the most lethal types of marine debris. Thank you Governor Ige, Senator Gabbard, Senator Rhoads and all the lawmakers who helped this important bill become law. Thank you to everyone who wrote testimony in support and/or signed our petition with over 1500 signatures.

What a great Earth Day! Just a few minutes ago a bill (HB1102) we initiated to ban balloon releases statewide passed final reading in the House! It now goes to the Governor who hopefully will sign it into law. Mahalo to Hawaii’s lawmakers!
