Steven Seegel, a professor of Slavic and Eurasian studies at The University of Texas at Austin has been awarded the 2024 Vega Medal by the Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography (SSAG), presented by Carl XVI Gustaf, King of Sweden.

The Vega Medal is awarded annually by SSAG for outstanding scientific achievements and recognizes, with this year's award, Seegel's contributions to the field of Human Geography.

A historian of Eastern Europe specializing in critical cartography, the practice of analyzing the agendas and power structures underlying maps, Seegel has written several books about the complicated lives of maps and their makers. To Increase Engagement with Female Students, UT Instructors Teach Like Influencers 02/04/2024

While the majority of undergraduate students in the U.S. are women, the field of economics remains overwhelmingly male.

To address this disparity and increase engagement among all students, a team of instructors and researchers from The University of Texas at Austin are testing a new approach: They’re teaching like influencers.

That is, they’re incorporating lessons from four of the most popular female influencers on social media to both appeal to Gen Z students and teach foundation-level economics concepts.

Elizabeth McCracken's Work Recognized With International Awards 20/03/2024

UT Department of English Professor Elizabeth McCracken has been announced as the winner of this year’s Wingate Literary Prize for The Hero of this Book.

"In a timely and timeless fashion, McCracken’s powerful writing lets you be privy to secrets you just want to shout about," wrote the judges of the prize. "A thoroughly involving read that wrestles with memory, illness, place and identity; The Hero of This Book is moving in every sense."

This honor comes on the heels of another award for literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
