“Why do I have a hearing loss!?”

While hearing loss is commonly associated with aging, it's essential to recognize that age isn't the sole factor. There are various reasons for hearing loss, including genetic predispositions and underlying health conditions like diabetes or heart disease. High decibel noise exposure. It could even be a combination of multiple factors at play!

As Audiologists, we've seen older patients with varying degrees of hearing abilities - from severe impairment to completely normal hearing. So, we can't attribute all hearing loss to age alone!

If you or a loved one are concerned about hearing loss, don't hesitate to reach out! We are here to provide expert support and options!

It’s all about raising awareness for communication disorders and hearing health. Some ways you can help communicate with and support those with hearing loss include the following:

• Make eye contact when speaking
• Speak clearly and slowly
• Use visual cues or facial expressions
• Keep your mouth visible
• Reduce background noise
• Rephrase what you said, if they can’t understand or hear you
• Make sure they’re being included in the conversation
• Be understanding
• Consider using assistive listening devices for them

Our ability to hear and communicate is extremely important.

Remember, communication is a two-way street - let's listen actively, speak kindly, and ensure everyone's voice is heard loud and clear.

This month we want to walk through what your first hearing test would entail. That way there are no surprises, and you know exactly what to expect!

When we think about hearing loss, we often picture the aging population. Children with hearing loss can get forgotten. It is well known that hearing loss can lead to feelings of isolation and depression in adults… and this can happen in children too!

Research published in 2022 found that children with hearing loss were more likely to show symptoms of depression and largely report that they’re bullied. We hear this our office almost daily.

Children with hearing loss need support from their families and friends just like adults with hearing loss do!

Empowerment is key!

Do you have a new IPhone!? If so, there are some pretty cool features that can help people with hearing loss! Here are a few of our favorites:

The Live Captions feature allows you to have a transcription of your conversation in real time for phone calls, FaceTime calls, and web content. You can also personalize the font and text size! GAME CHANGER!!!

The Sound Recognition feature can notify you when your phone detects 15 different sounds, like your stove timer beeping or your doorbell ringing. These sounds can easily be missed by a person with hearing loss, but this feature gives you a visual notification on your phone! SAFETY FEATURE!

The Sensory Alert feature lets you set visual or vibrating alerts for incoming calls, texts, emails, and calendar notifications. You can have the LED light flash, a photo of the person calling come up on the screen, or have tap/vibrations come along with the notifications. VISUAL INFO IS ALWAYS HELPFUL!

We always love to hear features that make our patients' lives easier!
