874 Head Sold off the Show List July 9-14!
A down week in the futures made for a slow week across the markets. August live cattle test the bottom of the channel in this upward trend. Looking for Aug 24 live cattle to trade north of the 20 day moving average at $183 to lead the next leg up, breaking the line below $181.50 to the downside will likely be followed by more selling pressure.

2-4 YO cow calf pairs for sale near Laurel, Montana. These heifers are small-framed and feed-efficient, designed to raise lightweight, grass-fed calves. The herd consists of 95% black cows and 5% red cows, with some crosses, including two red cows and 2-3 red calves.

These heifers originated from Northern Montana and calved between April 20 and June 15. Traditionally, the calves from this program are kept over as yearlings. The ranch has been sold, and the cow herd dispersed, but these heifers were kept to calve and are now being sold as pairs. Each calf will be tagged to match its mother.

The program focuses on pasture calving with cows that have medium frames, emphasizing longevity and feed efficiency. A touch of Salers and Hereford genetics has been introduced to maintain hybrid vigor, which helps these calves thrive in a yearling operation. The yearling steers have historically shipped at weights of 860 lbs, reaching up to 925 lbs in some years. These calves are ideal for selling as lightweight, high-dollar calves or growing into premium yearlings.

The sires come from Crowley, Diamond D, and Indreland Angus herds, selected for their focus on longevity, functionality, and weaning weights. The mature cows in this herd have a weight of 1275 lbs or less, aligning with the program’s efficiency goals. All heifers were vaccinated with Cattlemaster VL5 and treated with pour-on at preg check on October 19th.

For more details or to arrange a visit, please contact us. Asking $3,400 per pair OBO. Call or text Boe (406)-855-0051

Calves are selling at higher prices, about 10% above last year's rates. Here are some key observations:

475-525 lb steer calves: $335-$345
550-590 lb calves: Mostly over $3/lb
600-635 lb steers: $285-$301 (avg. $296)
640-680 lb steers: $285-$292 (avg. $289)
Early October 700 lb steers: $292; later deliveries: around $282

High prices for large calves shipping early, reflect a better chance of being fat for the April market. Although yearling sales were limited, feeders anticipate abundant and affordable feed.

GAP Certified and Verified Natural calves show no observable premium.

Stay tuned for more market updates from our dedicated team!

Summer 2024 Cattle Market: Anticipating Record Prices
As we gear up for the summer marketing season, we're anticipating another record price year for cattle. Despite some spring setbacks, short supplies and strong demand have kept the market robust.

Timely rains have boosted feed production, with corn in the Midwest getting regular rains and hay stocks looking promising in Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas. Feed costs should be less of an issue compared to recent years.

After my recent trip through the Midwest, I've gathered valuable feedback from our cattle feeders. Buyers are cautiously optimistic and aiming to hedge risks rather than speculate, which may lead to modest price increases over last year. General consensus is a $15-$20/cwt rise, with many calves hitting the $3/lb mark.

Our team is excited about the season ahead and committed to providing you with regular, relevant market data. Stay tuned for our technical analysis of the futures markets affecting cattle prices.
