Dr. David Fernie, Wheelock Professor of Early Childhood Education, believes deeply in the importance of play in children's learning. "You have to give play its place in childhood and recognize it's important. It's not just wasted time."
Wheelock alum Ruth Lizotte '66 spent most of her career teaching 3rd-8th grade in public elementary schools. "It was hands-on, experiential education," she says. "Wheelock's philosophy fit for every stage [of my career]," she says. "Teaching adults, little kids--it doesn't matter. Everything I use in my day-to-day teaching came from something I got at Wheelock. It's in my soul."
In this footage from a 100th anniversary video, Wheelock President Daniel Cheever -- who served as president from 1983 to 1991 -- talks about the many ways that the College has grown and improved since its founding in 1888 by education visionary Lucy Wheelock, while still staying true to its mission to improve the lives of children and families.
What started as a kindergarten class with Lucy Wheelock has over the course of a century turned into one of the leading colleges in the worlds of early childhood education and social work. Wheelock has expanded over the years and now benefits the Boston area and the world abroad.
Congratulations to the Wheelock College Wildcats!

Among those featured are then-Academic Dean Majorie Bakken, who later served as Wheelock's President from 1994-2004 and Wheelock graduate Linda Banks-Santilli '85, who in 2001 became an associate professor of education and is currently Wheelock's Dean of the School of Education.
