We recently spoke to David, who thrived thanks to a fantastic six-year mentoring relationship with Greg. David's story perfectly captures the essence of what mentoring is all about:

"We talked about the week, play chess, backgammon, talk about interesting topics." This casual atmosphere created a safe space for David to connect and share freely with Greg over the years.

But the benefits went beyond just hanging out. "I'm looking at applying for jobs for after graduation. He is helping me with that." Greg became a valuable resource for David, offering guidance and support during a crucial time.

David describes mentoring as "good because it takes your mind off things, but they can also help you with school and goals." Having someone to talk to like Greg can provide a much-needed break, while also offering encouragement and a fresh perspective. "They can tell you to keep going. You can learn from their experiences. They are like a guide."

Mentors walked alongside students who experienced sorrow and difficulties this year. Many mentees express that their mentors help them deal with stress, anxiety and depression, which improves their mental health.

He makes even the hardest times easier to handle. I try to do that with my friends. He cares for the community—encourages me to help others, and I try to do that.”

"It sounded like an outstanding idea," Sierra shared when she first heard about Be The One Mentoring Program. With a busy home life, Sierra craved one-on-one time with a trusted adult.The wait was worth it when she met her mentor, Nancy. They began with games and conversation, but their connection blossomed quickly. "I felt like I could totally trust her after only one session," Sierra confided.

Now, over a year later, laughter fills their meetings, even though Sierra jokes, "I have to teach Nancy every game we play!" Despite the playful competition, their bond is undeniable. "We plan to keep meeting as I enter high school," says Sierra, a hint of nerves mixed with excitement in her voice.

Feeling Heard, Building Trust:

Students want a mentor who truly listens. Jenessa, a student in a health class, found just that in Be the One.
"Everyone else tells me it's not a big deal," Jenessa says about her challenges. But her Be the One mentor, Elise, is different. "She always listens to me and lets me talk it out," Jenessa shares.

The connection felt even more special when Jenessa realized Elise was the mom of her friend who recommended Be the One! Now, after a year of meetings, Jenessa has built "more trust in adults" and enjoys genuine conversations with her mentor.

"It's a way to have fun at school."

Selena was shocked how fun mentoring was. Her mentor Denise encouraged Selena to follow her dreams and try out for the middle school drama production. Selena took her advice and got the lead role in the play.

"Denise is so supportive and caring, I cannot imagine life without her."

"Having a mentor is the best thing I have ever done in my entire life.” For her part, Denise is happy she can mentor “the girl she never had.”

What do you enjoy about mentoring?
"I love being with my student and finding out what they are like--what their personality is and what they like or dislike. It's a discovery of their hearts which is like a treasure to understand and value a growing relationship. It's so obvious how much the student enjoys our time."

What motivates you to mentor every week?
"I enjoy seeing the growth in the student, as they mature and face the ups and downs of life.
Encouraging my mentee, asking God what to share, what to ask, and praying for her brings me joy."

"Mentoring helps keep me young, I enjoy seeing things through a young person’s perspective. I like knowing there's someone out there who might be looking forward to seeing me and that I may be helping in some small way."

Amber was looking for someone to connect with.

With a huge smile, Amber shares about her mentor Stacey, "I wanted to just walk with somebody and get a break from school. Sometimes we draw or make bracelets, I love making the bracelets. I am less stressed, I really like talking to Stacey. I'm really comfortable with her."
