If you’re looking for any last minute gifts for kids, it wouldn’t CRUSH our feelings if you considered buying one of our children’s picture books 😍
If you didn’t know, I write kids book and Jenn illustrates them! I had actually forgot to post BUT I’ve had a few people tag me in them and we’ve signed a couple since I’ve been back in Clifton. Thanks for the love and support ❤️🥰
THE BOOKS ARE ON AMAZON! Easy peezy. Type in my name or the title of one of the books, it should pop up! If you have issues, DM me for a link!
Our 3yo begged me for a Spider-Man costume at the beginning of October. Then, he freaked out about wearing the Spidey costume for the library Halloween party, and I had flashbacks to last year when he refused to wear his dinosaur skeleton costume to go trick-or-treating, leaving us scrambling at the last minute. We had to throw his cousin’s soccer shirt on him, put a toy soccer ball in his hand, and hope for the best.
My husband said, “Who cares if he doesn’t like his costume? We can still take him to trick-or-treat.”
I was horrified. My husband is the guy who was planning to walk around in a mermaid costume. He’s the king of not caring what people think. He didn’t GET it.
I hated the idea of walking door-to-door with my son dressed in regular clothes. Half the experience was about dressing up, right? Besides people might think I was too lazy to get my kid a costume or that I wasn’t a good mom because I couldn’t talk him into wearing it or something.
I got the idea to make this shirt as a backup in case he didn’t wear the Spider-Man suit. I won’t lie. I think it’s pretty clever. It made me laugh, and it helped me relax and to remember that trick-or-treating is supposed to be FUN. And if my shy son was nervous about dressing up or if he felt itchy or uncomfortable in any other way, it wasn’t fun for him.
He ended up surprising us all and wearing the full suit, including the mask, for the entire time we were out on Halloween. We all had a blast!
But the real lesson here is not to let perfectionism get in the way—
I had the painful realization that I cared more about the opinions of strangers than my own child’s feelings. This was HIS experience and MY experience, not theirs.
So why was I so worried about it? First off, most people probably wouldn’t have cared. But if they DID, that’s their business and has nothing to do with me.
Unfortunately I’d fallen into the trap of believing that if someone thought something negative about it, it must be true. Worse, I thought those negative things about myself. I thought that my kid not wanting to wear his costume meant something was wrong with my parenting… and quite frankly, that’s dumb.
I’m so glad I recognized this before I accidentally sabotaged a *perfect* experience for all of us 🎃 Sharing in case anyone else can relate or needed the reminder!
Relationships are dumb 😅
