Last month I had the opportunity to attend the Lifesaving Summit in Alabama. The Lifesaving Summit brings CPR + AED professionals together from around the country in an effort to strengthen CPR awareness and training in our communities.

This year's Summit keynote speaker was Jeremy Parr, Head Athletic Trainer from Loyola-Blakefield school in Maryland. In 2021, Jeremy was present on the sideline of a Loyola-Blakefield lacrosse game when an athlete was struck in the chest with a lacrosse ball. The shot to the chest caused the player to collapse and suffer Commotio Cordis. Commotio Cordis is a lethal abnormal heart rhythm that occurs following impact to the chest and leads to cardiac arrest. This is the same condition that Buffalo Bills football player Damar Hamlin suffered last year!

In 2021, Peter Laake (the Loyola-Blakefield lacrosse player) survived due to the Loyola-Blakefield athletic staff's immediate response and timely actions.

Would you know how respond if a player at your son or daughter's game collapsed? Would you know how to assess someone who collapsed? Are AEDs available at your child's playing field/gym? Do you know how to use an AED?

If you answered no to any of these questions than there is an easy solution.......take a class and learn the easy steps to potentially help save someone's life!

As a father of three daughters who play multiple sports, I have taken notice that AEDs are not present at all town fields. In addition, my youngest plays at school fields on the weekends and I wonder if that school door would be open in order for me to access an AED.
