It has been such an honor working with Cape CARES, and I am thrilled for the years to come and how I, as a Honduran, can help this organization continue to work to provide care where it is so desperately needed. This organization has encouraged me to pursue my BSN and a career in healthcare, and work towards providing such a basic human right around the world. Now that I have a little insight of the behind the scenes, it is clear that we need each and every one of you to donate to our cause!
Every dollar donated goes directly to providing clinical operations, medications and supplies. EVERY DOLLAR! Our Development Director and Board President have successfully secured enough funds through a grant to pay for all administrative expenses, leaving all donations to directly fund the program.
With the cost of pharmaceuticals and supplies on the rise, and of course the pressure of inflation felt around the globe, we need each and every one of you to chip in! Please support Cape CARES today before the year is over and help us have a successful THIRTY THIRD year in providing care to people who need it most.

November, 2017 - Cape CARES organized one last trip to Centro de Salud Apacilagua, where we operated out of a small government-run clinic and saw 500+ people over the course of a week. We were well-received, as the community was acquainted with previous brigades, and the flow of patients ran steadily day after day. In the stream of people and faces we saw, one stands out in my memory: a man with a wrinkled, wise face and white beard who stood out from the crowd, despite his short stature, and carried a sturdy cane and weathered sombrero. He was also the only one to arrive by donkey. When he was seen, we were shocked to discover he was 102 years-old and quite healthy, a fact he attributed to living life as though he was young.
Throughout the week, he lingered around the clinic, accompanying his daughter and son-in-law as they were also seen, and catching up with other community members. The waiting lines often provide the perfect opportunities to catch up with people you don't see very often. On our last day in Apacilagua, unbeknownst to us, the centenarian had arranged for a surprise feast of atole, a corn-based drink made of grounded kernels, milk, water, cinnamon, and sugar, often reserved for special occasions because it is labor-intensive. There was enough to go around, for the doctors, volunteers, and clinic staff, and even the patients. It was a a way to say thanks, he said.
I never saw him again, we stopped visiting Apacilagua since they had a local clinic for the community needs, but I will never forget the image of the hundred-and-two year old man silently riding away on his donkey.

Cape CARES Central American Relief Efforts
Cape CARES has spent the last 30 years serving rural communities in two locations in Honduras, Los Encinitos and San Marcos. Returning to each community multiple times a year has allowed for Cape CARES to build a team-centered primary care practice that provides medical and dental treatment, follow up care, preventive care, health education, and community needs assessments.
Access to health and dental care has always been limited in Honduras. Long travel distances that are costly and time consuming are just some of the barriers faced when trying to seek access to health and dental care.
Cape CARES, with the support of the surrounding local communities in Honduras, provides sustainable access to both medical and dental care that is accessible, reliable, and free of charge to our patients.
And that is where you come in!
None of this would be possible without you, and the generous support of donors like you!
Help us continue to serve our patients in Honduras!

Our Story
In 1988 6 medical and dental professionals from Cape Cod traveled to Honduras, with a Texas-based organization. The Cape contingent led by Ted Keary, included Grover Baxley, Dan Fraunfelter, Seth Harvey, Einar Ruud, and Mitch Tishler. Dissatisfied with the fact that this organization never returned to the same location, after participating on three of its trips, the Cape Cod volunteers discussed creating a new organization. The new organization would establish its own clinics in areas where there were none, thus enabling the medical and dental professionals to return to previously visited areas and to see patients for follow-up care. Within a matter of months, the Cape Cod volunteers' discussion gave birth to Cape CARES, Central American Relief Efforts.
Cape CARES now sends 9 teams annually to serve at its 3 clinics in southern Honduras. Our clinics are in San Marcos, Los Encinitos, and Apacilagua. Cape CARES works to truly serve the people of Honduras by providing ongoing, dependable health care services.
