May 2024 Specials - A little something for everyone!
Starts today through May 1st. These are some of my favorites. What a deal!
It’s food for thought! Here is a newsletter my sister shared with me on some of the Dirty Dozen harmful chemicals, where we get them and what you can do about it.
I was surprised about the dental sealants containing a plastic with BPA and its link to breast cancer, obesity, early puberty, and heart disease to name a few. What surprised you? I’d love to know.

Optimal Bio's Monthly Wellness Newsletter
We all know there are toxins in our current environment and that they “aren’t good for us”, but do we really know what they are, and what they do to our body? What many people don’t realize is that as we age, our hormones decrease at a much quicker rate due to the exposure of unwanted environmental factors. In this newsletter, we’ll discuss the common toxins found in our environment, where they come from and what they do to our body, but most importantly, we’ll provide suggestions on how to decrease this toxicity in our everyday lives.
Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDC’s)
These harmful chemicals are everywhere, and there is no end to the tricks they can play on our bodies. They increase production of some hormones and decrease production of others. They can turn one hormone into another and interfere with hormone’s signaling by telling the cells to die prematurely. EDC’s compete with vital nutrients. Below is more information about the top twelve EDC’s.
The top twelve “Dirty Dozen” of EDC’s are as follows:
BPA (Bisphenol A)
BPA is a synthetic estrogen. It is a key component of polycarbonate plastic, thermal receipt paper, the epoxy resin inside food containers, industrial equipment, sealants in construction, sealants in dentistry. BPA has been linked to breast cancer, obesity, early puberty, and heart disease to name a few. According to government test reports, at least 93% of Americans have detectable levels of BPA in their body.
What can you do?
Buy fresh foods, not packaged foods when possible. Many food cans have BPA. Say no thank you to receipts. Thermal paper contains BPA. Avoid plastics marked with “PC” or recycling #7. Drink out of stainless-steel water cups and water bottles instead of plastic bottles.
Dioxin
Dioxins form when chlorine or bromine are burned in the presence of carbon and oxygen, usually in industrial processes. They disrupt the signaling of s*x hormones. Exposure to low levels in vitro and in early life can permanently affect s***m count and quality in men.
What can you do?
The American food supply is widely contaminated, and it is hard to avoid, but products like meat, fish, eggs, and butter are the most likely to be contaminated. You can decrease your exposure by eating fewer animal products.
Atrazine
Atrazine is an herbicide, used widely on the corn crops in the United States and is in the drinking water. It has been linked to breast tumors, delayed puberty, prostate inflammation, and can actually turn male frogs into female frogs via “feminization”. These frogs even have viable eggs.
What can you do?
You can decrease exposure to Atrazine by using a water filter certified to remove atrazine, and avoid products made from corn.
Phthalates
Phalates trigger “death inducing signaling” in testicular cells making these cells die sooner than they should. They also affect hormone production, s***m count, s***m mobility, and can cause birth defects in the male reproductive system. They have also been linked to obesity, diabetes, and thyroid disorders.
What can you do?
Avoid plastic containers, plastic wrap, things with recycling label #3 listed. Some personal care and beauty products also contain phthalates. Avoid items with “fragrance” listed as an ingredient.
Perchlorate
IPerchlorate is found in fireworks, road flares, rocket fuel, and explosives. It has also been found in lettuce, milk, and bottled water. Perchlorates enter the surface and ground waters and are readily absorbed by plants. It interferes with iodine uptake into the thyroid gland, which is essential for our health. It is currently allowed to be used in food packaging and can get into our food sources. Pregnant women with exposure may have children with cognitive and learning delays, premature birth, and lower IQs.
What can you do?
Start using a reverse osmosis water filter system. Try to avoid foods grown in contaminated areas (areas known to be irrigated with perchlorated water such as in California or anywhere from the Colorado River source).
Fire Retardants/Bromine/PolyBrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE’s)
The levels of fire retardants in our environment has been doubling every five years since 1972. These chemicals imitate thyroid hormones, and disrupt the thyroid hormone functions.
What can you do?
Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter, avoid reupholstering foam furniture, and routinely replace the padding under your carpets. Check your mattresses and make sure they are at least from 2005 or later.
Lead
Lead is a heavy metal that harms every organ system in the body, particularly the brain. Other harmful effects include brain damage, hearing loss, miscarriages, and kidney damage. It also lowers your s*x hormones. It also disrupts the HPA Axis (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal), which disrupts our hormone signaling, and deregulates our ability to manage stress. Lead can lead to anxiety and depression as well.
Common Sources: Crumbling/flaking old paint, unfiltered water that comes through lead pipes.
What can you do?
Keep your home clean and well maintained. Crumbling old paint should be professionally removed. Use a good water filter. Eat a healthy diet.
Arsenic
Arsenic hides in food and water. It causes skin, bladder, and lung cancers. It affects your hormones functioning and the glucocorticoid system. Arsenic disrupts our ability to process sugars and carbohydrates causing weight gain or loss, immunosuppression, and insulin resistance. Osteoporosis, growth restriction, and cognitive dysfunction have also been linked to Arsenic.
Common Sources: unfiltered water, seafood, rice, mushrooms and poultry depending on where they are sourced from.
What can you do?
Use a good water filter that specifically lowers arsenic. Rinse your rice before cooking it, buy whole fruits instead of juices, wash and peel root vegetables.
Mercury
Mercury is a naturally occurring but toxic metal that gets into the air and the ocean. It comes from burning coal. It ends up on your plate as contaminated seafood. Mercury affects our insulin, testosterone, estrogen, and adrenaline. It also builds up and affects fetal brain development. It can interfere with menstrual cycles, ovulation and deregulate hormones. Mercury can damage cells in the pancreas causing an increased risk for diabetes.
What can you do?
Eat sustainable seafood only. Wild caught salmon and farmed trout are good options.
Perfluorinated Chemicals (PFCs)
99% of Americans have these in their bodies. One form of this, called PFOA or C8, is completely resistant to biodegradation, and therefore will never break down and will continue to be in our bodies for generations to come, even though it is now banned.
PFOAs are linked to decreased s***m quality, low birth weight infants, kidney disease, thyroid disease, can alter s*x hormone production, and more.
Common Sources: Non-stick cookware, stain and water resistant coatings on clothing, furniture, carpets.
What can you do?
Skip non-stick and teflon pans.Try using Stainless Steel or Cast Iron. If you have non-stick cookware do not keep any that have scratches in them. Cast iron actually helps improve iron supplementation as well. Skip water and stain resistance treatments on clothing, furniture, upholstery, carpets etc.
Organophosphate Pesticides
These chemicals were originally produced for warfare. They are neurotoxic compounds produced in World War II. The same chemistry is now used to develop a long list of pesticides that target the nervous system of insects in crops. Exposure affects brain development, behavior issues, infertility, and many other issues. It interferes with the way testosterone communicates with your cells, lowers testosterone, and alters thyroid hormone levels.
What can you do?
Buy organic produce, use the Clean 15 Dirty Dozen when shopping for produce to find those with the least amount of potential pesticide. https://www.ewg.org/foodnews/
Typically things that are less porous, and/or have a peel on them are less contaminated. Coffee is one of the most contaminated food items.
Glycol Ethers
Glycol Ethers are solvents in paints, cleaning products, brake fluids, and cosmetics. They are linked to infertility, health risks to unborn babies, lower s***m counts, asthma and allergies.
What can you do?
Use the EWG’s guide to healthy cleaning to help you choose less toxic household cleaners. Avoid products with 2-butoxyethanol (EBGE) and methoxydiglycol (DEGME)

Do you tell your kids to put on old clothes and shoes before going out to play or work in the yard? Well this is me after I chose not to listen to my own good advice. Have you ever caught yourself doing that? 🤣
We had snow and ice for 9+ days in East TN. Timber Tree, a local tree removal company braved the winter weather within a day’s notice and removed a dead rotting tree that barely escaped falling over to the ground. We highly recommend them for your tree and stump removal if you are looking for that service.
Needless to say the yard was a muddy mess, but my son and I worked diligently, hard, and fast (proud momma moment) to move the fireplace logs to a more permanent place.
The Problem: It’s my fault that I wore a good fleece sweater and vest to a dirty job like a dummy. The wood chips, leaves and dirt stuck to me like glue. I didn’t have the time or want to to even pick off every piece.
The Solution: It was worth a shot to try this stiff neck hard bristle brush on it. It worked like a charm! It’s a great solution for a problem like this and fabric like this. What have you tried that works on microfiber or fleece when it gets dirty or nearly ruined? I know I am not the only one.
Tack this baby on top of your qualified purchase for 💲8 bucks this month or get it for 💲13.99 plus t/s the next time your shop.
