Gluten Free Watchdog's study, "Gluten-Free Foods Cooked in Shared Fryers With Wheat: A Pilot Study Assessing Gluten Cross Contact" was published a year ago in Frontiers in Nutrition. Last week we found out that it has more views than 99% of all Frontiers articles. This was a first of its kind pilot study designed to answer the question, "When fries are cooked with foods containing wheat, are they gluten-free and safe to eat?" To view a consumer-friendly version of study findings, see https://www.glutenfreewatchdog.org/news/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/FryStudyConsumerFlyerFINALUpload.pdf.

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) occurs when there's an imbalance and overgrowth of bacteria in your small intestine. These bacteria typically reside in your large intestine, but many factors can cause them to relocate to the small intestine causing symptoms like gas, bloating, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and constipation. There isn't one specific meal plan that's right for every case of SIBO. Here are four options that are helpful in the treatment of SIBO. Functional nutritionists are trained to help you determine which option is right for you.

What are you eating today?

THE SPECTRUM OF DIETARY NEUROTRANSMITTERS

When I eat plant foods, I am reminded that I'm not just eating macronutrients (protein, carbohydrate, fat), micronutrients (vitamins, minerals), and phytonutrients (polyphenols, carotenoids, alkaloids, organosulfur compounds), but also neurotransmitters (and hormones).

The research doesn't clearly conclude that eating food sources of intact neurotransmitters changes our systemic neurotransmitters to the extent that they influence brain levels. Yet, I think it's interesting to begin to think about all the many ways that these molecules might be having activity in the body beyond their traditional roles in the brain.

Perhaps they are not just 'neurotransmitters' but plant messengers to our cells that modify function. It's interesting how initial terms (like 'neurotransmitters' or 'hormones') given to biological or botanical compounds may be limiting in scope once we find out their actual functions. After all, plants are expansive, like us.

Conversely, it is possible that eating foods rich in what we refer to as "neurotransmitters" has similar results to how they work in the brain. In other words, it would be fascinating to study whether eating plantains and pineapples leads to greater serotonin levels and resulting shifts in mood or whether eating more mung beans, peas, and spinach can help us with memory.

In the meantime, I'll keep eating my rainbow of plants!

In a study of heart disease, people who consumed diet drinks every day had a greater risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Artificial sweeteners have proven to be carcinogenic in animal studies. They wreak havoc on your gut microbes, destroying beneficial bacteria and causing glucose intolerance. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Something that tastes sweet but contains zero calories may sound like the perfect cure for sugar addiction. But it’s not, and here’s why. Normally, when you eat or drink something sweet, it’s accompanied by lots of calories. But not when you consume artificial sweeteners. This confuses your brain. It senses that the taste of sugar without the accompanying calories from glucose and fructose is wrong, and it tries to correct the imbalance by making you hungrier. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Not only that, but it also confuses and slows your metabolism down, so you burn less calories every day.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Bottom line: There is no free ride. Diet drinks are not good substitutes for sugar-sweetened drinks. They still (or even more) increase cravings, weight gain, and type 2 diabetes. And they are addictive.⁣⁣
