Tonight our very own Bremen senior Carlos Torres performed the solo part of the first movement of Strauss’ 1st Horn Concerto with the South Bend Youth Symphony. What an incredible performance by an incredible young man.

I'm so proud to announce that the Bremen High School Band once again qualified for the Indiana State School Music Association All-Music Award. This is 7th time in the last 10 years that Bremen has received this award.

This award is given to schools who show excellence in all parts of their band program by receiving a gold rating in marching band, group I solo/ensemble, jazz band, and concert band. This year, a little over 10% of Indiana high schools managed to achieve this honor.

Bremen Public Schools, the town of Bremen, and every single student should be incredibly proud of being among that 10%. Congratulations to everyone who had a hand in accomplishing this feat.

So this is where I am supposed to post something nice about our HS Concert Band Festival performance tonight at Penn High School. The students did indeed perform very well, and all three judges agreed, giving us excellent scores and a strong gold rating at the highest difficulty level. Then we received a gold for our sight reading, where we are given 10 minutes to prepare a piece we have never seen before and perform it for another judge. These accomplishements are a phenomenal achievement for Bremen Public Schools.

But that isn't really the message I want to convey. I don't really know the words to properly describe what I DO want to say. I had the honor of conducting "Unbroken" by Randall Standridge. This is a newer, monumental piece that demands a level of sophistication not always asked of high school musicians.

And they knocked it out. of. the. park.

It was an overwhelmingly emotional experience. No, not every note was correct. Not every rhythm was together. But it still was a 15 minute transcendental experience for me and our students. Eyes were shining. Student volunteers from Penn who had been there for 5+ hours working stopped what they were doing to hear. And our students made music in a way that they will always remember.

As awe inspiring as listening and consuming great music can be, becoming a performer and producer of great music is always more. It's just more. It's difficult to describe, but if you know, you know.

If you missed this performance, we will play two of the three pieces we did tonight again at our last concert on May 18 at Bremen High School. Don't miss it-- it's worth the experience.

Just got back to Bremen a few minutes ago-- what a great day at State Solo/Ensemble!

The 19 students who qualified performed in 8 solos and 4 ensembles. The results? All but one solo and one ensemble received a gold rating, and the others received silver.

Beyond that, their behavior was fantastic, representing Bremen with dignity and maturity.

I am beyond proud. Congratulations to all performers.
