Electronic devices are everywhere these days. Last year the DMASWA diverted 100.02 tons of electronics from the landfill that were repurposed or recycled. To learn more about which items are accepted and to schedule a required drop off appointment, visit www.dmaswa.org/electronics today.

Fiscal Year 2023 saw 50,858 pounds of materials reused/recycled instead of disposed of through the DMASWA Reuse Shed and our paint recycling program.

During Fiscal Year 2023, the DMASWA properly managed 49.33 tons of household hazardous materials, including paints, stains, cleaning products, lawn chemicals and automotive chemicals. Proper management of these materials helps to protect the environment, which is why the disposal of household hazardous waste is offered at no cost to Dubuque County residents. During Fiscal Year 2023, the DMASWA diverted 1,760 appliances for demanufacturing and recycling. Proper demanufacturing ensures Freon and other hazardous materials in present in many appliances are properly managed and recycles the metal and plastic from the appliances. The DMASWA accepts tire from all types of vehicles, from riding lawnmowers to farm tractors and everything in between. During Fiscal Year 2023, 345.04 tons of tires were diverted from the landfill and sent for recycling into new products. To learn more about tire recycling at the landfill visit www.dmaswa.org/tires

During Fiscal Year 2023 the DMASWA metal drop-off program diverted 77.75 tons of scrap metal for recycling. Metal can be dropped off in the green roll-off container next to the landfill entrance.

During Fiscal Year 2023 the DMASWA glass recycling drop-off program diverted 344.04 tons of glass for recycling. Recycled glass is made into new bottles and jars and fiberglass insulation. During Fiscal Year 2023, the DMASWA Household Recycling Drop-off program collected 578.6 tons of materials which were sent to a material recovery facility and sent for recycling into new materials. To learn more about what materials are accepted visit www.dmaswa.org/164

In Fiscal Year 2023, 125,536 mmBTU's of Renewable Natural Gas were collected, cleaned, and distributed through the DMASWA partnership with Dubuque Gas Producers.

During Fiscal Year 2023, the DMASWA distributed 849 cubic yards of United States Composting Council STA Certified compost, most of which was distributed through four Residential Self Load bunkers. During Fiscal Year 2023, the DMASWA managed 2,573.36 tons of yard debris and food scraps at it's composting facility. During Fiscal Year 2023, the DMASWA managed 176,894.9 tons of waste which was buried in the landfill. While a large percentage of this waste could be diverted, most of that same waste could be prevented. As the year draws to a close, take time to consider how you can work to prevent waste by making wise purchasing decisions. When prevention is not possible, remember to reduce, reuse, recycle and recover the material to keep it of the landfill by using one of our many diversion programs. www.dmaswa.org

What does one do with holiday lights that are no longer merry and bright? Recycle them of course! The Dubuque Metropolitan Area Solid Waste Agency’s Holiday Light Recycling Drop Off Program, now in its fifth year, is helping divert thousands of pounds of old and worn-out holiday lights from the landfill by giving them new life. Resident can make a quick and convenient drop-off at any of the below locations from November 13, 2023 - January 13, 2024: Dubuque Municipal Services Center – 925 Kerper Ct., Dubuque Bins Located next to the entrance doors) Carnegie-Stout Public Library – 360 W. 11 St., Dubuque Dubuque County Library District – 5290 Grand Meadows Dr., Asbury City of Dyersville City Hall, 340 1st Ave E, Dyersville Residents can also drop off holiday lights and other electronics all year by appointment at the Dubuque Metro Landfill – 101 Airborne Rd., Dubuque.
