VILLAGE OF NEWARK RECEIVES $50,000 GRANT
Governor Kathy Hochul announced over $23 million has been awarded to support 101 communities across the state through part of Round XIII of the Regional Economic Development Council Initiative. The award will help promote smart, sustainable and equitable community planning, development and construction of projects that focus on accessible economic, community, environmental and recreational improvements in all New York’s regions.
The Village of Newark was awarded $50,000 to develop a Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) for its Erie Canal waterfront. The LWRP will identify and address shoreline erosion, flooding, water quality, and public access issues and propose stormwater management improvements and recreation opportunities enhancements that foster job creation and economic investment in the community and the Finger Lakes Region.
The Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) provides grants to communities to develop a community-driven plan with a vision for their waterfront, guided by several environmental policies to ensure projects work in harmony with waterfront natural resources and ecosystems. The projects, funded through the Environmental Protection Fund (EPF), help local communities expand public access to their waterfronts and protect the environment, while also boosting tourism and economic development opportunities. These awards cover a variety of planning, design and construction projects that focus on accessible economic, community, environmental and recreational improvements.
“An investment in smart growth and sustainable community development is an investment that will pay dividends for generations to come,” Governor Hochul said. “These programs are essential elements in the State’s bold, innovative efforts to create a more prosperous, equitable and sustainable future for New Yorkers of all backgrounds, incomes and abilities.”
Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado, Chair of the Regional Economic Development Councils said, “This is how we build a more equitable future across our state. By investing in our communities and funding crucial economic development programs, we can ensure more New Yorkers have access to the opportunities, tools, and resources they need to succeed.”
New York State Secretary of State Robert J. Rodriguez said, “Sustainable, equitable and resilient community development forms the backbone of New York’s renaissance in community and downtown revitalization. These grant awards will help reinvigorate waterfronts, reimagine and redevelop abandoned industrial sites and create resilient and environmentally sustainable neighborhoods.”
Empire State Development President, CEO and Commissioner Hope Knight said, “These grant awards funded through the REDC initiative reflect projects and programs that are actively designing a sustainable future for New York, one that emphasizes smart growth and building on regional strengths. By revitalizing waterfronts and giving new life to former industrial areas, we are strategically boosting local economies around the state.”
Senator Pam Helming said, “This grant, funded through The Local Waterfront Revitalization Program will go a long way toward making the Village of Newark a more vibrant destination for business, tourism, and recreation. This award will help promote smart, sustainable community planning, which protects our environment and natural resources. Thank you to Mayor Jonathan Taylor, and village and state agency partners who contributed to this important initiative.”
Assemblyman Brian Manktelow said, “I continually applaud the Village of Newark for seeking out these grant opportunities, and the State for recognizing the value that these grants will have on our community. This prudent investment into maintaining our portion of the Erie Canal will ensure that we are able to share its history with everyone who wishes to see it. Together we can promote our history, enable more public access, protect the shorelines, and bolster our local economy by placing more emphasis on projects like
this. “
Village of Newark Mayor Jonathan Taylor, said, "The Local Waterfront Revitalization Program planning grant is integral to the continued redevelopment of our community. Once the plan is in place, it will allow Newark to grow as a desirable destination to live, work and play."
About the Regional Economic Development Councils
The Regional Economic Development Council initiative is a key component of the State’s approach to State investment and economic development. In 2011, 10 Regional Councils were established to develop long-term strategic plans for economic growth for their regions. The Councils are public-private partnerships made up of local experts and stakeholders from business, academia, local government, and non-governmental organizations. The Regional Councils have redefined the way New York invests in jobs and economic growth by putting in place a community-based, bottom-up approach and establishing a competitive process for State resources.
Due to high winds tomorrow, the North Clinton St. (from East Union St. to Van Buren St.) will now be closed to ALL traffic on WEDNESDAY, November 29th, from approximately 8:30 a.m. until approximately 2:30 p.m. There will be no through traffic allowed. Village of Newark is awarded $150,000 from New York State Canal Corporation through Round XIII of the Regional Economic Development Council Initiative
The New York State Canal Corporation announced that eight upstate municipalities will receive more than $950,000 in grants from the Canal Corporation through Round XIII of the Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) Initiative. Regional Councils reviewed projects from this program and provided scores that reflect how well a project aligns with a region’s goals and strategies. Since its inception, the REDC Initiative has identified and invested in significant economic development projects, revitalizing communities and businesses across the state.
The grants will support improvement projects in communities along the Canal system across upstate New York which will promote recreation and tourism through investment in the functionality and beautification of areas surrounding the Canal and Canalway Trails.
The Village of Newark was awarded $150,000 for the design and installation of a new ADA accessible kayak launch at the Port of Newark.
“The significance of the New York Canal System is twofold: it is both a vital economic lifeline for communities across upstate and a cherished recreational haven that boosts our tourism industry while fortifying the well-being of our canalside communities,” Governor Hochul said. “I take immense pride in reaffirming our state’s commitment to the prosperity of these communities and the canals that serve them. Each of the eight Canal Corporation grants will contribute to the creation of an inclusive canal community that all New Yorkers will be proud of and able to enjoy.”
Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado said, “The New York Canal System plays an indispensable role in our state's economic and recreational landscape. Through these grants we are proud to demonstrate our commitment to ensuring that the Canal’s future is one that includes all New Yorkers. Each grant is an investment in a more inclusive waterway and trail system, allowing all of those in our state the opportunity to appreciate the full potential of our canalside communities."
New York State Canal Corporation Director Brian U. Stratton said, “For nearly 200 years, our canals have formed the backbone of more than 200 upstate communities and as we look forward to the next century, the grants being awarded today will ensure the canal corridor is vibrant and accessible for future generations. I applaud Governor Hochul for her commitment to our canals and I know these investments guarantee the continued prosperity of so many communities.”
New York Senator Pam Helming said, “Residents and visitors alike are seeking more opportunities to utilize outdoor space for time with family and friends; the Canal Port of Newark is an ideal place to do just that, and ensuring increased access will benefit all of those who live and visit Newark. It was my pleasure to support the Village’s efforts to secure this funding and I look forward to seeing this project come to fruition."
New York Assemblyman Brian Manktelow said, “This is a great step forward in solidifying Newark as an economic and tourism center in Wayne County, The Northern Finger Lakes region, and along the Erie Canal. At one point the canal was vital in establishing communities, like Newark, across the state, and now it helps drive their successes. I applaud Mayor Taylor, the village of Newark and New York State Economic Development for prioritizing a project that will bolster our local economy, drive tourism and promote the history of the Erie Canal.”
Mayor Jonathan Taylor stated, “We are pleased to receive this Canalway grant. Director Stratton and his team’s vision for the canal aligns with our goals to make Newark’s T. Spencer Knight Park a destination for both visitors and residents. This award will help further our vision.”
Mark Peake, Economic Development Facilitator, commented, “The Village of Newark is thankful for the receipt of the Canalway Grant. This award will promote the Village’s vision to increase tourism by providing visitors with amenities that will enhance their experience while utilizing the Erie Canal and the Empire State Trail.”
Congratulations to the winners of the Pumpkin Sculpture Contest! Residents and businesses were asked to paint, stack, or carve pumpkins to make a pumpkin sculpture and their pumpkins sculptures were judged on Fall Sprit and Original Design. Mayor Jonathan Taylor presented the Pumpkin Trophy to the best business entry, the Terrace at Newark, 208 Route 88 South. He also presented a basket of holiday goodies to the best residential entry, Patrick Moses, of 1331 Summit Drive.
