In 1505 Albrecht Durer, painted this stag beetle. There were many painters during the Renaissance period who focused on natural history themed works at this time depicting just flora and fauna. Another example would be Leonardo Da Vinci who drew dragonflies and beetles to study flight during the same time. The study of science and living things became popular and was called Natural Philosophy at the time, and dozens of illustrators and lovers of nature began to catalog and study animals to bring a better understanding of nature and strengthen the spread of empirical knowledge and science to the common person as well as nobles and kings. This beetle remains one of the most famous Renaissance paintings of the time from a very famous painter.
