As we turn the calendar’s page, we celebrate the changing season with shop windows that tell the timeless tale of hearth and home. Our beloved Statue of Liberty was a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States.
It was, however, a joint project with the statue itself being built in France, while the US financed and built her massive pedestal on Liberty Island.

The statue’s head and torch-bearing arm were completed before the rest of the statue and were shipped to the United States to help raise funds for the construction of the pedestal.

Here, as part of the fundraising efforts, the arm stood on display in New York City’s Madison Square Park from 1876 to 1882.

Happy 4th of July!🗽🇺🇸💥❤️

The shop will be closed today as we celebrate this star spangled holiday. We are back to regular hours tomorrow, July 5th at 10:00am.

With its roots going all the way back to the Middle Ages in Europe, Father’s Day was first observed in the US on a very small scale in Fairmont, West Virginia in 1908 following a local mining disaster in which 250 fathers lost their lives.

There were many attempts over the years to make it a national holiday, but it wasn’t until 1966 that the third Sunday in June was proclaimed by President Lyndon B. Johnson as an official day to honor fathers.

For actions big and small, through all they do recognized and unrecognized…to all the father figures in our lives, we wish a very Happy Father’s Day!

Prepping a collection of US Navy flatware (used during Second World War) for the floor got me curious about life on board a navy ship. This account was pretty fascinating:

“The wardroom was the officers’ mess where we dined, watched movies, socialized, and played games such as cribbage, acey-deucey, and bridge. Musical moments were many. A piano was available in the wardroom for our use and combos from the ship’s band frequently entertained us at dinner. The tables were set with white linen tablecloths and napkins in engraved or numbered silver napkin rings, silver flatware, Navy blue and white china, and silver candlesticks. Even silver finger bowls were used when we were served messy finger food. We were Old World formal!

The stewards in white starched aprons brought the food on silver trays to each of us, serving from the left and allowing us to take what we wanted. Nothing was placed on the table to be passed. Coffee and tea were brought to us and served from silver servers.

After the meals, the tables were cleared and the tablecloths replaced with green felt table covers. The officers were then free to play at the preferred games until movie time. Movies were shown each evening and on Sunday afternoon from 35mm projectors from the starboard side of the wardroom. The movie screen was a sheet hung from the beam in the center of the overhead (ceiling). The projection could be seen on both sides of the sheet. The junior officers had to sit behind the screen and watch the movies backwards. It was interesting to see a baseball game from the backside of the screen and watch the batter hit the ball and run for third base. Whenever a letter came up on the screen crucial to the plot, we yelled out “Read it please, Sirs.” Rank had its privileges.”

(Account by Lieutenant (jg) Tracy Wilder, F Division Officer, from the site of the Battle Ship North Carolina. Photo from a wardroom of the period.)

A limited quantity of WWII-era US Navy Silverware available in the shop or online!⚓️

A huge thank you to for polishing all the flatware and sharing this historical account of US Navy Officer life!

Every year at the end of May, our nation pauses to remember her fallen heroes. More than just a long weekend, or a day for a picnic or a parade, Decoration Day, as it was originally called, was decreed in 1868 for the “purpose of strewing with flowers or, otherwise decorating the graves of fallen comrades who died in defense of their country”.

On this Memorial Day Monday, may we pause and listen closely to hear our nation’s anthem sung by the silence of her fallen heroes.🇺🇸

“It started with a delightfully one-off egg cup from a coronation in 1937, but what are soft boiled eggs without salt, or toast, or the correct way to measure loose tea to make a brew?

Making a late breakfast on a morning off is one of my favorite rituals. Helping a customer assemble the accessories of a perfect breakfast for a loved one was a fun highlight of the week at the shop.”

definitely knows how to start the morning on the right foot! Thank you for sharing your late, leisurely breakfast ritual and passing the love of a properly served breakfast on to all of us! Did someone say “breakfast in bed”!?🤩

In France, the first of May is known as la Fête du Muguet!

It’s a special day for giving out sprigs of lily-of-the-valley to those you love as a token of happiness and good luck. It’s also a day when anyone is allowed to sell these flowers on the street. For this day only, no license is required and the earnings from selling these flowers are tax free.

The flowers must have been picked in the wild or from a garden (preferably from your own, of course 😉).

If ever there was a day that called for a cup (several cups?) of tea, it’s today on this snowy, sleety mess of a spring day. (Winter and spring are clearly still in disagreement over who is calling the shots!)

Thank you to for bringing his skilled TLC to this gorgeous Antique French Tea Caddy and making it ready to once again hold your favorite loose tea exactly for days like this.

“This antique French tea caddy came in recently from Paris: It was wearing some of its honestly acquired rough-and-tumbles on its face. The various grains of its veneers were disagreeing on what direction to shrink the *teensiest* bit over time and needed securing. (When veneers have a disagreement they are very civilized: They just begin to silently arch their backs and retreat from one another until they flake away & disappear.) The thing needed a gentle sorting out.

(The tag on the tiny key was probably my favorite detail.)”

We’ll be the first to admit that our beloved Easter Bunny tradition is kind of hard to believe: a bunny? travels around the world? hiding colored eggs and baskets of candy? for the children to discover on Easter morning?!?

Well, as it turns out, we’re not the only ones with strange, far-fetched Easter traditions!

In France it’s not a bunny, but “cloches volantes”, or flying bells, that leave the chocolates, candies and decorated eggs for children.

Flying Bells?!? The story goes that on Good Friday the church bells go silent, grow wings and fly to Rome to visit the Pope. (Ummm...sure, why not?!?)

After the little Italian getaway, the bells fly back to France filled with goodies to drop across the countryside as they return to their steeples just in time to ring out on Easter Sunday morning.

Bunny vs. Bells. Both traditions involve chocolate, so we’re in no matter what...but which one seems more believable: an Easter bunny? Or Bells that fly?

Happy Easter! Joyeuses Pâques!

Perhaps like many of us, you were introduced at a young age to an adorable Francophile elephant in a bright green suit named Babar.

Babar the Elephant series of children’s books was created in 1931 by French artist Jean de Brunhoff. The beloved children’s classic began as a bedtime story that Jean’s wife Cécile told her young sons, Laurent and Mathieu.

They loved the story about the little elephant so much that they asked their father to draw pictures for them of the elephant world their mother had described. He did and eventually created a book, Histore de Babar: le petit éléphant (The Story of Babar).

Jean’s son Laurent de Brunhoff vowed to take up the Babar mantle at the age of 21, after the death of his father. He had inherited his father’s artistic gift, trained at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and began living as an artist in Montparnasse. But, wishing to maintain his tie to his father and the imaginative world of his childhood, he turned back to the character his father had drawn and taught himself to draw in his father’s style.

He went on to publish over forty-five more Babar books and would see Babar grow to become a global phenomenon. There are now over 30,000 Babar publications in over 17 languages, and over 8 million books have been sold.

Laurent de Brunhoff, French author and illustrator, passed away on March 22, 2024 at the age of 98.

Thank you, Laurent. You will be greatly missed by children of all ages around the world.
