Care Collective

Care Collective

Care Collective is a start-up on-demand Caregiving Marketplace Platform. #carecollectiveapp How do you find help?

The concept of Care Collective came from a 2016 University of Tampa Executive MBA workshop session in lean start ups. Our original idea, UHelpCare, was a one-stop-shop for a peer-sharing care community. Our team had caregiving experiences in the recent past, present life, and concerns about aging or chronically ill family. In 2019, our founder, Rebecca, experienced one of the biggest challenges pl

The Tampa Bay Health care quarterly meet up didn't disappoint. Talking jobs and recruiting. Yeah... we got jobs, training and a plan to subsidize education to gig workers on our platform to get CNA licenses and more.

Tonight we connected and networked with
Florida Association of Veteran-Owned Businesses, Inc. on a discussion of health care improvements available and on the voting docket for the Veterans Administration. With 2 VA hospitals here in Tampa Bay (Tampa and Bay Pines) and new Outpatient Facility in New Port Richey, there were lots of things we learned and heard from active, transitioning/newly retired, or seasoned veterans. Many of us in the room got more informed about programs and their rights in the VA benefits, TriCare, and Community Care options. We are looking to partner with the Veterans Administration to leverage long-term care assistance and work with and their families to get affordable, dependable, and flexible care faster and when they need it most.

When you are an entrepreneur hustling for 5 years to win a very coveted pitch competition with and you win, you do what actors do when they win an Oscar. They go to an In-n-Out or boil up a Top Ramen and remember the journey. For me, it's a bowl of generic rice crispies.
I didn't even know about the event until the day before, only registered a few hours before the 1st session because I had not just 1 but 2 clients cancel pet sitting services this weekend, therefore no plans. Little did I know that the conversations, the mentorship and the persistence to stay awake this weekend with new friends and fellow entrepreneurs would award me with 1st place in the Techstars Startup Weekend Tampa Bay. I molded a better pitch, I made a better presentation, and I came up with a quick visual prototype to validate a solution that will work in today's need for healthcare. Personally and professionally.
A million thank yous to Akshay Bhuva, Alexander Wingeier, Mayra Harley, Mike Harley, Tracy Ingram, Brooke Beeler, Charlton Trezevant, Max Larson 🚀 , Samantha Ramos, MSITM, Dr. Sue Goodman, CFA for your time, insights, and support. Allen Clary, Dr. Andy Hafer, St. Petersburg, Will Freeman, Techstars for having this opportunity close to home! Patrick Maslanka, Allen Clary, Alison Barlow, , and James Faison for being the judges! And to all of the mentors, supporters, friends and family who have been here since the beginning, God bless you for putting up with my crap and sometimes incessant questions. Care Collective has some new morale fuel as we are raising funds to launch!

Do you know this important woman?

Clarissa Harlowe Barton was an American nurse who founded the American Red Cross. She was a hospital nurse in the American Civil War, a teacher, and a patent clerk. Since nursing education was not then very formalized and she did not attend nursing school, she provided self-taught nursing care.

The American Red Cross was founded on May 21, 1881. Training Services is one of the five divisions of the American Red Cross, responsible for providing health and safety training to the general public as well as the workforce. In fiscal year 2017 the American Red Cross trained 2.28 million people how to save lives through their First Aid, CPR or AED courses, water safety and care giving programs. There are a wide variety of course offerings available:

Administering Emergency Oxygen
Advanced Life Support
Anaphylaxis and Epinephrine Auto-Injector
Asthma Inhaler Training
Babysitter's Training
Basic Life Support
Bloodborne Pathogens Training
California Child Care
CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers
Emergency Medical Response
First Aid/CPR/AED (English and Spanish)
Hands-Only CPR
Learn to Swim
Lifeguard Management
Life guarding
Longfellow's WHALE Tales
Nurse Assistant Training
Pediatric Advanced Life Support
Responding to Emergencies
Safety Training for Swim Coaches
Title 22 (California First Aid for Public Safety Personnel)
Water Safety
Wilderness and Remote First Aid
In addition to basic level certifications in the above courses the American Red Cross also offers Instructor level courses and Instructor Trainer (IT) level courses. Instructor level courses are designed to teach participants how to become instructors for American Red Cross courses, whereas Instructor Trainer courses (also known as Instructor Trainer Academies) are designed to certify current instructors to become Instructor Trainers, or people who can teach Instructor level courses.

Training Services has an online store where you can purchase supplies including First Aid Kits, CPR key chains, flashlights, and emergency radios.

We are sad to announce that Frank Paone, our Founder's father, has passed away. He made his transition the morning of April 15th. Frank's children and wife will miss their goofy and loving father and husband. We all send our condolences to them and those who will miss Frank's smile, humor, ornery at times nature, and determined attitude to advocate for the best care possible. May he be free to ski the best slopes, cycle the best roads, and cheer on the Philadelphia Eagles, Phillies, 76ers, and Flyers from the best seats in the house.

The Best Education & Friends

UHelpCare (UHC) started in November 2016 during a breakout workshop with our first semester Entrepreneur Development Master Level Class, Executive MBA program, at the University of Tampa. Our Professor, Dr. Rebecca White, took the day off to celebrate her daughter’s wedding out of state and had Adjunct Professor, Dr. Andy Gold, substitute and conduct his Lean Start Up lecture and think tank. Dr. Andy Gold is part of the Million Cups group locally and heads the Hillsborough Community College Entrepreneur Business program.

The cohort group, SoRRTS (Stephen Dunham, Ryan Hill, Rebecca Paone, and Jyothivel “Shivan” Shivan), was assigned to pick a challenge or something we like and figure out a way to improve it. All of us in our group had recent experience in caring for someone close to us - a spouse with cancer, a father who suffered a massive double stroke, a spouse with auto immune issues, and a mother and grandmother who passed of cancer, a child who developed spontaneous epilepsy and other neurological issues in her early teenage years, and raising children despite 2-parent households was a challenge.

All of us had that emotional tie and never-ending experience. Cancer can come back. Health continues to decline. And we all age and will need help at some point. We talked and discussed how people have to search and hunt for the things they need. Social Workers and Care Advocates can only do so much and even they don’t know it all. The internet provides so much in niche specific things, you have to hunt, call, interview, visit, call, search, and it’s a continuous cycle. It’s time, it’s energy, it’s overwhelming. No one is immune to caregiving, even with normal children and family members. Raising a normal child is just as taxing as caring for a parent with dementia that needs round-the-clock care.

In the initial lean start up exercise we broke down the need on easel paper and markers. We drew out the target user. The services they can get. The problems we can solve. The people and team we need to leverage. And shared with the class to get more feedback.
