The Clan celebrates the genealogy and heritage of those with the surname Carr, Karr, Car, Ker, Kier and other variants of the Scottish name Kerr
ABOUT CLAN KERR/CARR OF THE UNITED STATES AND NORTH AMERICA, INC. In the mid-1990’s a group of Borderland Carr Lowlanders and others of it’s the twenty eight Kerr/Carr Septs noticed the absence of a Clan Kerr/Carr presence in North America and the difference between a family and a clan. While the variant spellings of the word Karr, Carr, and Cier are all pronounced Kerr, the Kerr family of Scotlan
d has for many decades been a clearly defined family with inheritance and blood line issues going back centuries. It was pointed out in this instance that some twenty-eight family names on Kerr lands were allied with the Kerr family of Jedburgh, also known as the Lord Lothian, but not actually a part of the Kerr family, but a clan owing fealty and loyalty to the Kerr’s. The definition of a family and clan became an question and led to a decision to create an inclusive new Clan in North America representing all of the various Septs listed under the Kerr’s of Jedburgh at Ferniehirst Castle.(1)
An informal new clan organization came into existence over the following decade which attended over fifty highland games and exceeded a hundred and fifty members through late 2012. In 2013 the membership decided to form a not for profit clan corporation in the state of Florida. The new organization was named Clan Karr/Carr of the United States and North America, Inc., and was stood up in March 2014.

(1) Websters Dictionary defined a Scottish Clan as: ‘A Celtic group in the Scottish Highlands comprising a number of households whose heads claim descent from a common ancestor.’ A family on the other hand is defined as, ‘A household including servants as well as kin of the householder, or a group of individuals living under one head.’
