from a living room filled with the feathers of decorative corpses
from shotgun shells, patience, and wait for him to call
long live the carnivore
where a look and fear of the belt were enough to get you right
owing many lessons to tree climbing, homemade forts, and my furry friend Fitzhugh
I am from balance and overindulgence
a slave to the list
sprouting from obsessive compulsion and a**l retentiveness
where insecurities come from thin, not thick
with quick hamburger helper one night, homemade goodness the next
from repetitive verbal and physical taunting from my older sister
until that Pogo Ball incident, that is
birthed from bikes, basketballs, and skateboards
diving head first into curbs with no helmet
from ceaseless defeat at the hands of neighborhood comrades
completely content with 8 bit graphics at home and pixelated green screens for travel
growing up slightly south of the emerald giant, where that SM58 resides in the sky
where the placement of 808s are important for those crazy nights coming home
where garages aren't meant for cars, but for stuff
until your son wants to use it for a rehearsal space

I am built of acoustic guitars, fretless basses, keyboards, V-drums, and microphones
taught to embrace the art of gambling, all the while knowing that a push is better than a poke in the eye
I'm from the school of sleep-when-you're-dead because productivity is more important
from one of the top three music schools in the nation
even after being told I'd never succeed
I responded with Cum Laude
engaging with stage fright and consistent forced misery until it evolved into excitement
from oxblood boots with 8 eyes, ripped jeans, trench coats, and faded concert tees
needing shovels to dig deeper than the bland surface
embracing the trip because a**lyzing the journey is worth it
don't forget to pick, roll, smoke, and smell the flowers
facing fears with sweaty palms
battling heartbreak with no regrets
dying to stick needles into myself
destined for piercings and tattoos since early on because it's so cool
from moving on, pushing forward, but still looking back
I am from drastic ends of the spectrum
from countless bad decisions, many of which you will never hear about
frequently Down in a Hole, but making use of the hidden Stairway
understanding the valleys between Paradise City and The End
Counting Black Crows amongst the Stars, while tracing footsteps of the King
sometimes falling face first into the concrete
learning that poorly done stitches lead to plastic surgery
where permanent marks are reminders of mistakes and harsh outcomes
