The TLA's philosophy is simple: "If we are to save the Kansas tallgrass prairie, the first step will be to keep the ranchers on the landscape: everything else becomes secondary."
Does anyone know why the Kansas smoke model is "down for an extended period," and if and when it will be available? https://ksfire.sonomatechdata.com/view/summary/

Folks: I sent this out a couple weeks ago, but this is just a reminder. The Davis family of Madison, KS has invited us to their ranch for a day of learning and fun.
The Davis Ranch tour will be Thursday, June 15, 2023, starting at noon at Andrew and Ashley Davis' place. The address is: 1373 340th Road, Madison, KS. Don't trust your GPS on this one. There's a better way. From Highway 99, go west about six miles on Road 350, the first road south of Madison High School, to Road R or River Road, then south on Road R one mile to Road 340 and back west 1 1/8 mile to Andrew and Ashley's farmstead on the north side of the road.
The Davis family has been doing some excellent range and livestock management that they want to show us. A short list includes late summer burns for sericea control, use of patch burning and rotation grazing, limited access water sites in ponds, extensive invasive tree removal with burning, management of go-back land, in-pasture no stress weaning, plus a lot more.
I think you will want to come a little early and tour the dual-purpose work and party barn that Andrew and friends moved piece by piece several miles and reconstructed on site. It is REALLY nice. You will want to do a tour. We will meet in and around the barn. Please bring a lawn chair too as we may gather outside under the shade trees.
During the Lunch & Learn Andrew will tell us about the history of their family and the ranch then explain their grassland and livestock management program. We will then take a driving tour with several stops and ending at their innovative cattle working facility. Their veterinarian says it's the most efficient cow/calf working facility he knows of.
Lunch is provided and sponsored by Frontier Farm Credit. As always, I will need a count for the caterer. Please RSVP to me via phone call, text or email.
Oh, an additional reason to attend will be the lunch. Owen Reed will be catering the meal. (Just that right there may be enough to get some of you to attend. :)) The buffet style menu is BBQ Prime brisket, cheesy potatoes, coleslaw and chocolate sheet cake. Please RSVP so Owen will know how much to prepare.
See you in a couple weeks!
Roger
