So here's the story of how I started making custom party favors and my experience with Etsy. Probably the most fun thing I make are custom beverage holders or as I like to call them "coolies" (because the common name most people call them by is trademarked and we don't infringe on trademarks or copyright here at DF) When I make a custom coolie order it feels like a tiny bit of me gets to go to every party that my coolies go to and life is a constant celebration! So I started when a local bride to be wanted some customized coolies to add to her swag bags for guests at her bachorette party. I don't even remember the design we did but I think it was some variation of "bride tribe" with an arrow and a heart on one side and her name the party date and location (Nashville) on the other side. Did you know more Bachelorette parties occur in Nashville than any other city? I sure have made alot of custom coolies for them! So out of that first 14 piece order I had a couple of people contact me wanting custom coolies for their birthday parties. Apparently its super expensive to buy small quantities of custom coolies, but I will do a custom design for any quantity even if you only want one coolie and my price is the same.

Before I knew it I had set up an Etsy shop and was making order after order of custom coolies for different events. Birthdays, baby showers, girls' trips, golf outings, fundraisers, Bachelorette and bachelor parties, groomsman and bridesmaid proposals, boat themed, riverfloats, camping trips, fantasy football, tailgating, lake cottages, family or class reunions, cruises...you name it and I've probably made custom coolies for it. That was 2014 and things were pretty good for 7 years. Along the way, Etsy decided to make some changes that made me feel less like an entrepreneur and more like an employee. They started pushing for free shipping and suggested raising prices to cover the "free" part by charging more. Then they started keeping a percentage of any shipping that sellers did charge. Next they began advertising products and charging sellers for the advertisements. We couldn't even opt out of that advertising and were encouraged again to charge more to offset the cost. I didn't want to have to increase my prices so Etsy could make more money. I didn't want to be forced to participate in advertising that Etsy decided on and then be billed for it. I didn't want them to decide anything for my business! So like many others, I made the decision in 2021 to leave Etsy behind. Don't get me wrong, Etsy was great for teaching me how to work my business and I did make money with them but I didn't want anyone telling me what to do in my business.

I have continued to serve customers both new and former, through Amazon Handmade, Facebook and my website. Which brings me back to the number one event people order custome coolies for...BIRTHDAYS! People love to commemorate birthdays with a fun party favor. Whether funny like "have a cold one for the old one" or naughty like "dirty thirty" or just cute like "RIP to your fake ID" the birthday party customers are always fun to work with.

So if you have a birthday party coming up you too can keep your guest's beverage cold with festive or funny custom coolies.
Design service is included in the price of $3 each for one sided one color coolies. Two side are $3.50 each. Select from regular 12 oz, slim can or zippered bottle style coolies. With so many colors and styles available, the possibilities are endless. You can also count on quick production and standard shipping is never over $5. (you can pay extra to upgrade your shipping if you're in a time crunch) Message me to order.

This is the story of how I got started making things for other people. Sometimes being a "maker" is not just making party favors and funny t shirts. Sometimes there are tears and hugs and pain involved. This is a story many women know well, including my friend that inspired this. Before we met she lost her precious baby girl almost at full term. Her baby died in the third trimester and she had to give birth to a stillborn baby. She was heart broken and lost. Grief stricken and hormonal and in so much pain emotionally and physically. Many years later as she told me about it, I could see she still ached for her precious baby. She told me alot of people never acknowledge her loss because talking about babies who died is difficult and uncomfortable. She said it felt like no one cared that she suffered the worst thing any parent can suffer. As if her baby dying in utero was not an ongoing source of never ending pain for her. She said after the funeral no one mentioned her loss. She said it was like she was just supposed to start back to work and get on with her life even though she was swimming in an ocean of grief. I have never experienced what my friend and millions of other women have experienced but I have compassion for their grief and loss. My friend still marks the milestones of what would have been her baby's life. She decorates her baby's grave for every holiday and birthday. I wanted to help her grieve and also remember and honor her daughter. On what would have been her daughter's 8th birthday, I gave her the very first one of these memorial garden flag grave decorations. She loved it and convinced me to offer them for sale in my Etsy shop. I didn't want to at first because it seemed wrong to sell something to a grieving parent but she convinced me that grieving parents needed more ways to honor their lost babies. She said there weren't many ways available to commemorate infant loss. She said it would help people acknowledge the parent's grief by gifting a garden flag instead of figuring out what to say to acknowledge the ongoing devastating pain. So I listed them. Since then, it has been my honor to make hundreds of these flags to commemorate the sometimes very brief lives of the youngest angels. I've learned many parents and grandparents are looking for ways to openly grieve, just like my friend said. Every customer who purchases one of these flags has a heartbreaking story and they are so grateful to commemorate it and to tell their story. Each flag is sewn by me from weather resistant outdoor fabric and decorated with simple colorful decorations in heat transfer vinyl. Each one is unique even if I use the same verse, images and colors. Each one is made with love and care for the baby, and for the grief of the person who will receive it. I find myself so fortunate to connect with the customers who have suffered such loss and who have trusted me to share their burden just a little bit. Here's a few pictures of some that I've done.

DeLynn Belle 15/07/2022

So you might have noticed I've been updating the business page, adding listings, and trying to be more present. I blame it on my friend Ravin Rowe over at www.delynnbelle.com. She posted a reel the other day that inspired me. The basic concept in her video was "nobody's going to do it for you." I bet she didn't know how much I needed to see that just then. Her reel reminded me to get off my butt and get things done because nobody was going to do it for me. So if you get a minute go check out her boutique for some cute clothes, shoes and accessories at great prices. She has some great videos about styling your outfits too. Just check it out because sometimes, people bless you when you need it most!

This is how it started...

Back in 2014 I lost my corporate job. “We’re going in a different direction now, and we won’t need you any longer.” my boss said as he let me know I was done. I got fired once before when I was in college from a part time job, but that was no big deal. This time, I was the only source of income we had and I was worried. At first I was hurt, then angry, then kind of hopeful. Maybe this was an opportunity to finally do something I truly enjoy instead of something to make the most money I can. I really didn’t know what kind of job would make me happy to go to work every day. The only thing I could think of is that I had always dreamed of owning my own business, but I had no idea doing what. I just didn’t see how I could afford to invest in a cafe, bakery, or any business really. I mean, you need so much equipment and licenses and insurance and inventory and stuff, it was just a dream. I decided to keep looking for something in my salary range.

We used the job loss and my severance pay to finance a move back to Kentucky, where we intended to retire someday anyway. Here I was, 53 years old and looking for a job. I had been in charge of large operations making millions of dollars a year during the last 15 years of my career, and I made a good salary doing it. Now I found myself with lots of experience but few opportunities to use my acquired skills, especially in the rural area we live in now. I was also pretty disillusioned and burned out by the corporate world. But I kept looking, hoping to find something close to my previous income. Luckily, we had set ourselves up in life to live on a lot less than I was making at my old job. Plus, my husband Tim started working at a local factory within a month or so of us moving back to Kentucky. He was putting in so many hours overtime we were doing ok, but he was tired and cranky and didn’t really get to do anything but eat, sleep and work. He was carrying us financially with a little bit of help from my unemployment checks, which were scheduled to run out in December that year. The job search wasn’t going real great for me. Looking to get out of the industry I was previously in, I interviewed for a job and got offered a position about 27 miles from my house for $10 an hour. When I calculated it out, I would be making less to go to work than I was getting on unemployment at the time. I decided to keep looking. My decision was helped along by the fact that I was also caring for my little baby granddaughters during the day while their parents worked, something I could never do when I was working 50 or 60 hours a week in the corporate world.

One day, a person I knew messaged me on facebook and asked me if I would be interested in sewing some burlap garden flags for her. She was using a machine she had and turning them into custom designs and then reselling them for profit. I told her I would teach her how to sew them and save her some money, but she declined. She didn’t want to try and learn to use a sewing machine, but she was willing to supply the material and pay me $1 per flag. The woman she had doing them for her before wasn’t able to make them anymore, and this is what she had been paying her. I figured it would help fund my addiction to craft supplies, so I told her yes. The first order was for 22 garden flags. She paid me $25 for my efforts. When she picked them up she told me about a group she was in on Facebook, and said was pretty sure I could sell more of these flags in that group. So she put me in touch with the group administrator and I sent him a sample of my work. That resulted in my first 100 flag order, but this time I was getting $5 per flag. cha-ching!

I followed that up with another large order from the same group for white denim garden flags, and then another round of burlap flags. In the meantime, I was making burlap Christmas stockings and other stuff with my sewing machine. I got the bright idea of looking for a place to sell online and avoid all the facebook back and forth, setting delivery times, being stood up, and then eating the cost of custom products. Etsy was almost free to get started, by far the cheapest place for me to try selling my stuff, so I opened my store in November 2014. For the first six months I sold hardly anything, so I also kept selling locally through facebook. I saved half my income for supplies and equipment, and put the other half toward our living expenses.
I eventually saved enough from my sewing that I was able to buy a cutting machine and explore the world of vinyl crafting. I joined some facebook groups, watched lots of videos and taught myself how to make all kinds of cool stuff with my new machine! I made stuff for my family and my friends, then took photographs of what I made and posted it for sale in my Etsy store. During the first few months before my store took off, I had several loyal customers who kept me going. I worked at building my business and creating new products for every holiday, special event, etc. It worked! Here I am four years later with my own business, making a living by selling my crafts. Who says owning my own business is just a dream? I’m not anywhere near the salary I used to be paid, but I am making a living and I’m richer by ten fold because I am my own boss. I appreciate every single customer who has purchased from me along the way. I wouldn’t be able to do what I’m doing now without any of them. So now the biggest question in my life is what can I make pretty for you?
