When shopping for pollinator plants, ask the nursery if neonicotinoids were used in cultivation…. They are popular pesticides that kill bees!

Hardy hardy!

Quick quiz!!
Who knows what hard-to-find, shrubby, shade-loving Texas native these extraordinary blooms belong to?
❤️
Need a hint or two? It belongs to the cotton family that also include hibiscus, all kinds of mallows and okra too! The flowers never fully unfurl but still manage to magnetically attract hummingbirds and butterflies all season long!
❤️
Malvaviscus arboreus var. drummondii - AKA Turk's Cap, Drummond's Wax Mallow and (my own personal favorite) Sleeping Hibiscus
❤️

My girls will miss watching the resident 5 pound squirrel feast in the apricot tree, located just outside their bedroom window. We’ve eaten all we can eat, and given away more than that. Preserves?

Now the peaches are so heavy a branch broke off the tree. Serious pruning this winter…

Getting my collards on!

A community of seed savers has a recipe to revive rare varieties of collard greens Collards were once as diverse as the Southern families they fed, but countless varieties have vanished. The race is on to preserve and propagate. That's where the Heirloom Collard Project comes in.

I adore my worm bin. It is the most satisfying and rewarding method to compost. But it needs cleaning every now and then. When I take out the stuff the worms didn’t want, it makes me think about all that plastic we use every single day all over the world, down to the stickers on food. (No, I don’t know how the coffee filter got in there...)

(Clatonia perfoliata) Miner’s Lettuce

Saw some on my walk today and tasted it. In season April and May, the miners ate it during the California Gold Rush to prevent scurvy. It’s high in vitamins C and A.

Tasted like a more watery tender version of arugula. I like it! Perfect to use as a leafy green in salads or use the whole leaf, stem and flower as a base for spring hor d’oeuvres.
