🎄 Berkeley’s making their list… we’re checking it twice! Because we ALWAYS find out who’s naughty or nice. Apparently, we have three elves we need to add to the naughty list. Good thing we always get our cardio in.

A Berkeley County deputy was on patrol on Highway 52 in the area of Butterbean Road in St. Stephen. While doing so, the deputy observed a vehicle that was being operated with defective equipment. The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle and the driver, later identified as Brandon Lee Potter, did not stop for deputies. During the pursuit, deputies observed the front-seat passenger, later identified as William Derek Thomas, throw objects out of the passenger window and sunroof of the vehicle in an attempt to purposely cause damage to the fully marked patrol vehicles. The items Thomas threw did cause damage to the patrol vehicle to include a dented hood, cracked windshield, broken front grill and a dented radiator and A/C condenser. Thomas also caused another patrol vehicle to get a flat tire from the objects he threw out of the window.

The pursuit continued until Potter lost control of the vehicle which caused the vehicle to hit a tree. Potter, Thomas and the back-seat passenger (Ashley Sheree Hart) fled from the vehicle and into the woods. Deputies pursued Potter on foot and was able to apprehend him a few feet into the woods. When deputies attempted to identify Potter, he lied continuously to deputies…. Luckily we located his driver’s license inside of the vehicle on the driver’s seat.

Deputies then conducted a K9 track to locate Thomas and Hart. K9 Prima and her handler were able to successfully locate both subjects.

A check through dispatch revealed that these three are no strangers to trouble with law enforcement. Potter had a suspended license due to a previous Failure to Stop for Blue Lights and Sirens conviction. Hart was found to have a warrant through Berkeley County.

Potter was arrested and charged with Failure to Stop for Blue Lights and Sirens second offence, Resisting Arrest, Giving False Information to Police and Driving Under Suspension. As far as the for Potter, he has been arrested at least five times since 2014. Those charges include Obtaining Money Under False Pretenses, Malicious Injury to Property, Larceny, Breaking/Entering into a Motor Vehicle, Unlawful Carrying of a Firearm, Evading Arrest, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle (x2), Driving Under Suspension, Failure to Stop for Blue Lights and Resisting Arrest.

Thomas was arrested and charged with Evading Arrest and Malicious Injury to Property. As far as the for Thomas, he has been arrested at least seven times since 2012. Those charges include Family Court Bench Warrants, Failure to Pay Child Support (x3), Possession of M**hamphetamine, Possession of Burglary Tools, Criminal Conspiracy, Malicious injury to Property, Grand Larceny, and Driving Under Suspension.

Hart was arrested for her outstanding warrant and charged with Evading Arrest. As far as the for Hart, she has been arrested at least FIFTEEN times since 2013. Those charges include Shoplifting (x5), Failure to Pay Child Support (x6), Trespassing (x4), Possession of a Scheduled Narcotic, Contempt of Court, Malicious Injury to Property, Evading Arrest, Giving False Information to Police, Possession of M**hamphetamine, Breach of Trust, Receiving Stolen Goods, Obtaining Money Under False Pretenses (x2), Possession of Stolen Property - Property Crime Enhancement and Obtaining Goods Under False Pretenses.

Thank you will never be enough! 💚🙏 Recently, we awarded Sangaree Intermediate School Patriots Music Teacher Katherine Clarkson with the Sheriff’s Office Citizen Service Award.

On October 16, Mrs. Clarkson was on cafeteria duty at lunchtime when she observed a student choking on food. Mrs. Clarkson and other staff members immediately rushed to the students aid and began to assist by patting them on the back. After several failed attempts to dislodge the obstruction, Mrs. Clarkson took control of the student and performed the Heimlich maneuver which resulted in the student's airway being restored and the obstruction being cleared from the student's throat.

Mrs. Clarkson's rapid reaction undoubtedly saved this students life and for that, the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office recognizes this act and presented her with the Civilian Service Award.

Cpl. B. Key, the SRO at Sangaree Intermediate School, nominated Mrs. Clarkson to recognize the magnitude of her heroic actions that day.

While you were sleeping, your Berkeley County deputies were actively patrolling the roads and keeping you safe. When we conduct extra patrols, we do them at random in hopes of catching a crime in progress. The dedication of your deputies resulted in them catching a DRIVE-BY SHOOTING in progress.

During the early morning hours, deputies were conducting extra patrols around Cane Bay, Nexton, and Sheep Island. While doing so, they observed a suspicious truck on Sheep Island Road. Deputies observed the vehicle turn off their lights and then what appeared to be an occupant inside the vehicle firing a firearm from the passenger side of the vehicle. Deputies immediately attempted to contact the vehicle and the driver took off from the scene. Deputies were able to locate the vehicle and conduct a high-risk traffic stop where the driver (David Infinger) and passenger (Michael Bunch) were taken into custody.

K9 Kai responded to the scene with his handler to assist deputies. The team located two clear, plastic baggies that both contained a crystal-like substance. The substance field tested presumptive for M**hamphetamine and had a combined weight of approximately 48 grams. K9 Kai also conducted an article search with his handler and the team then located a firearm. The firearm was a R***r 9mm and was reported stolen out of Berkeley County since June 2023.

Other assisting deputies responded to the location where deputies observed the drive-by shooting to check on potential victims. Deputies located several spent shell casings and property damage on Sheep Island Road.

Infinger was arrested and charged with Trafficking M**h, Possession of a Weapon During a Violent Crime, Unlawful Carrying of a Firearm and Possession of a Stolen Firearm. As far as the for Infinger, he has been arrested at least one other time in Berkeley County for Receiving Stolen Goods.

We like to think we are pretty cool… but getting messages every day is not. Mr. Hood if you really wanted to meet us in person, all you have to do is come down to the office. There’s no need to double text 😉.

For this , we are asking the public’s assistance in locating James Hood, 38, of Two Hitch Road in Goose Creek. Hood is currently wanted for Harassment in the first degree. Hood is known to harass people via messaging, even after being requested to cease communication. Hood also frequently sends threatening messages to anyone who challenges his communication.

Berkeley Co. Detectives Charge Two Individuals After Dog Attack Leaves Man Dead

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. - (Thursday, November 2, 2023) Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis announced the arrest of two individuals after the investigation into a dog attack that left one man dead.

Detectives have arrested and charged 45-year-old Shannan Christine McCrackin, of Moncks Corner, and Kenneth Howard Swayne, 44, of Moncks Corner.
McCrackin has been arrested and charged with Involuntary Manslaughter and two counts of Dangerous Animals Unconfined on Premises. Swayne has been arrested and charged with two counts of Dangerous Animals Unconfined on Premises.

On Tuesday, October 31, deputies responded to a residence on Ayers Drive, in Moncks Corner, in reference to a report of a dog attack with a person severely injured. When deputies arrived on scene, medical personnel were tending to the victim. The victim was pronounced deceased on scene. The victim was identified by the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office as David Eller, 65, of Moncks Corner.

Preliminary investigations that were conducted by detectives revealed that Eller was attacked unprovoked by two vicious Pitbulls. The Pitbulls were not contained properly.

“This was a vicious attack on an unsuspecting victim, and this should have never occurred.” Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis stated. “If the owner of the dogs would have taken the proper responsibility for the safe keeping of the animals, the attack could have been prevented.”

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate this case.

Congratulations are in order!! 🎉

Earlier this month our K9 Unit participated in the North American Police Work Dog Association (NAPWDA) annual certification. This was an opportunity for our own K9 Unit, and other law enforcement agencies around the state, to participate in critical certification and training both in the field and the classroom. Our K9s and their handlers were able to cover topics that included narcotics, tracking, evidence, area and building search, obedience and aggression control.

Due to recent staffing shortages, any kid dressed up as law enforcement this Halloween will be required to work a 12-hour shift. Sorry, we don't make the rules. 😉

It looks like the BCSO K9 Unit had to call in a little back-up this evening! Remember, don’t be spooked if you see extra blue lights tonight. We will be in numerous neighborhoods to make sure everyone remains safe.

📸🧡 SHOW US YOUR HALLOWEEN PHOTOS! Comment below so we can see those ghouls and goblins. Have a safe and happy Halloween from BCSO.

31/10/2023

This Halloween let’s make happy memories, not tragic nightmares. The only thing scarier than zombies and witches loose on the streets is an impaired driver.

👻😨 SPOOKY FACTS: During Halloween night across the US (6 p.m. October 31 to 5:59 a.m. November 1) during the years 2017-2021, there were 159 people killed in drunk-driving crashes.

31/10/2023

😨😱 We know, there is nothing scarier than seeing blue lights behind you… but take our advice: JUST PULL OVER!

: Recently, a Berkeley County deputy responded to the area of Autonomous Drive in the Ridgeville area in reference to a group of vehicles racing in the area. This is not an uncommon call we receive, and we are CRACKING DOWN on reckless drivers.

When the deputy arrived on scene, he observed several vehicles parked on the side of the road and vehicle parked in the roadway. The deputy activated his lights and began to clear the area. While doing so, he saw a BMW traveling at a high rate of speed. The deputy’s in-car radar was able to capture the vehicle traveling an approximate speed of 100-mph in a 45-mph zone. The deputy also noticed that the vehicle did not have a vehicle license tag on it. The deputy then attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle.

The driver of the BMW, later identified as Austin Michael Kirkham, 24, increased his speed and a pursuit ensued. Kirkham began to drive recklessly without due regards to the public’s safety. After a few turns, another Berkeley County deputy was able to successfully deploy stop-sticks and the vehicle’s tires began to deflate. Kirkham was soon taken into custody.

Kirkham was arrested and charged with Reckless Driving, Failure to Stop for Blue Lights and Sirens and Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle. He was also issued a citation for No Vehicle License Display.
