Newark Public Library
Newark Public Library delivers essential services and resources to everyone seeking opportunities to build a better life.
The Newark Library is providing access to databases, homework help, storytimes, historical talks, tutoring, ebooks, audiobooks and more during this time.
Join the Newark Public Library LGBTQ+ Resource Center, on August 21st from 6PM - 8PM for a group discussion of Go Tell It on the Mountain by James Baldwin.
One of the most brilliant and provocative American writers of the twentieth century chronicles a fourteen-year-old boy's spiritual, sexual, and moral struggle of self-invention in this “truly extraordinary” novel (Chicago Sun-Times).
Baldwin's classic novel opened new possibilities in the American language and in the way Americans understand themselves. With lyrical precision, psychological directness, resonating symbolic power, and a rage that is at once unrelenting and compassionate, Baldwin tells the story of the stepson of the minister of a storefront Pentecostal church in Harlem one Saturday in March of 1935. Originally published in 1953, Baldwin said of his first novel, "Mountain is the book I had to write if I was ever going to write anything else."
Registration is required and accessible online at npl.org. Free copies of the book are available and will be provided upon request*.
*Just so you know, free copies of the book are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

"I don't know how to do it."
"Someone else will help."
"Why should I care?"
You can continue being an excuse maker (see above), or you can choose to embrace life and be ready to help your community in a moment of need. Administering naloxone to a friend, loved one, neighbor or total stranger should not be a mystery, and you learning how to do so literally could mean the difference between life and death for someone who has accidentally had an opioid overdose. Join the Newark Community Street Team's Overdose Response Team (NCST-ORT) and learn how prevalent fentanyl is in the city, how to recognize the telltale signs of an overdose, and, of course, learn to use Narcan to reverse an overdose.
NCST-ORT's motto is "We Want to See You Live." That means everyone in the community. Registration is encouraged but not required.
