Mercer Educational Resources, Inc.
My name is Jennifer Mercer, M.Ed. I have worked as teacher and administrator in schools from public to private, charter to tribal, for over 30 years.
Supporting educators in their tremendously important work with our children is very close to my heart. MERI's purpose is to empower adults to help children learn and grow successfully and reach their full potential! Whether you are a teacher, family member, program director or school administrator, our desire is to provide quality resources that you can count on. At MERI, we value and support the investment and commitment of early childhood educators to the development of young children.
(DAP) Developmentally appropriate practice is not just for early childhood!
Understanding how children grow and develop in each domain allows teachers to provide an environment and learning opportunities that meet and encourage each child’s needs, regardless of where they are on the continuum of learning!
Reasonable Boundaries = Safety
Often when children act out repeatedly about the same thing they are not just trying to drive you crazy :) They are only checking to make sure your limits/boundaries are the same, so they know what to expect. This makes them feel safe! Even adults feel better when we know the boundaries will remain consistent!

Creating a LOVE for Books!
As a first grade teacher for many years, it was clear that HALF the challenge of helping children learn to read is getting them to LOVE books. Once they love books, the motivation carries them through the challenging parts! Visit the library regularly and read 2-3 wonderful children’s books daily to your child! If they are books your child enjoys, they will soon love the reading time you share and the BOOKS! And then you are already half-way to having a reader!
Great resource for learning centers - both inside and outside!!!!

Many possibilities here when you consider mixing colors, and different sizes of balls or other rolling objects!
Talking to a Young Child
When a young child makes a poor choice with their behavior, be sure to separate the BEHAVIOR from the CHILD. Tell them, “I still love you, but I do not like that behavior. What would be a better choice next time?” Help them determine better options. Children can change their behavior but need to know they are still loved for who they are as a person.
Teaching the alphabet to young children? Check out this video that explains the difference between recognizing and naming alphabet letters.
Explora is such a great field trip for classrooms or families! Here your colored picture of an ocean animal is scanned in to swim with the pictures of other children. Their movement and response to touch is amazing to watch!!!
The words that you use with your child are so very important!
Think of it as your child having a bank inside their head that holds the words that they know and the new words that they learn every day. Make a deposit into your child’s word bank every day with new words that are relevant and meaningful to them.
Vocabulary is the #1 predictor of a child's success in school!
Fill their word bank and get them off to the best start!
Remember, as teachers, you are important and touching the lives of children every day! This impacts them not only today, but potentially every day for the rest of their lives. You make a difference!
Wonderful example for kids of reusing household items! Great project and so many opportunites for creative dramatic play!
