Founded in 2012, Kaua’i Maoli LLC formed out of a need to better organize Kaua’i-based cultural practitioners so they can respond to the many requests we h
Based on generations of exposure and study of ‘Ike Hawaii (traditional knowledge), our kumu come from various disciplines, have years of teaching experiences, and have taught in venues on Kaua’i, in Hawai’i, in the United States, and around the world. Our style of teaching is based on Kaua’i Malie, a style of hula, mele, and ‘ike (traditional knowledge) that is unique to the island of Kaua’i and w
hat we are known for in Hawaii and across the globe. We are committed to supporting haumana(s) understanding of Hula and cultural practices through innovative short-term interactive seminars and workshops. We firmly believe that if you want to improve your understanding of cultural practices and hula that focus on Kaua’i, it is good for you as a haumana to spend time with Kumu who come from Kaua’i and have strong bonds to the local culture, the land, ocean, and island resources. A big part of our workshop time is devoted to learning about and visiting the wahi pana (sacred/cultural places) that are talked about in mele, oli, hula, and mo’elelo. In each workshop, part of our time will be to visit cultural sites to understand the significance of place in relation to mele, oli, hula, and mo’olelo. We also devote some time in each workshop to teaching some basic Hawaiian language.
