Juneteenth has been celebrated for more than a century in the U.S., but it officially became a federal holiday in 2021. Juneteenth celebrates the liberation of African Americans from slavery in 1865. On June 19, 1865, Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger of the Union Army delivered the news that the Civil War had ended to Texas, thus freeing the final enslaved people in the U.S.

On Nov. 10, 2023, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs announced that all World War II veterans are now eligible for no-cost VA health care. Under this expansion, anyone who served between Dec. 7, 1941, and Dec. 31, 1946, will not have to pay inpatient or outpatient copays, enrollment fees or monthly premiums.

While veterans will no longer have to pay inpatient or outpatient copays, they may still have to pay modest medication, urgent care or long-term care copayments in some cases, depending on their eligibility and service connection.

Veterans who were not approved for VA health care in the past due to income limits are encouraged to apply again. The VA cannot automatically enroll these veterans. Therefore, World War II veterans must apply themselves if they are not currently enrolled.

DAV benefits advocates can help you file for VA health care. Please contact your nearest DAV service office by visiting benefitsquestions.org.

Today on , DAV wants to recognize two Gold Star family members, Jessica Jenson (left) and Erika Meagher (right), who both lost their partners while they were in service. Jessica’s husband was Sgt. Chad Jensen, 2d Raider Battalion, Special Operations Command. Erika’s fiancé was Staff Sgt. Marcus Bawol, a Marine assigned to Marine Special Operations Team 8231, 2nd Marine Raider Battalion.

These ladies volunteered at the inaugural Recon Raider Remembrance Ride, and their strength inspires us. Jenson and Meagher were joined by other Gold Star family members during the event last September, all supporting the ride in honor of the 201 Marine special operators who have died in wartime service. Have a very Merry Christmas!

From the DAV Department of Texas:
