This will be my 13th year as the HOSTS Instructor at Bridgeport Elementary. I absolutely love the HOSTS program and we couldn't do it without our awesome mentors! I can't wait to see you again soon. ❤️📚❤️📚

The HOSTS students really enjoyed reading our new books donated by State Representative Renee Pack. One of my favorites so far is “Churro Stand”.

Today, our HOSTS students had a special guest visitor. State Representative Renee Pack came to our class and read the book: To Boldly Go: How Nichelle Nichols and Star Trek Helped Advance Civil Rights. Mrs. Pack even came dressed in an astronaut outfit! The students loved the read aloud and had great questions afterward. Mrs. Pack also made a generous donation of books to our HOSTS classroom and our school library. All of the books were donated by Loudmouth Bookstore located at 212 E. 16th St. Indianapolis, IN 46202.

Today, our HOSTS students chose their favorite fiction or nonfiction text they read this year and wrote a book recommendation for our future HOSTS students. I really enjoyed reading why they recommend the books they chose.

Today was our final poetry reading for this school year. Here are some of the 3rd grade students reading the poem “Pizza Pizzazz”.

Today, the students used their Word Collector Journals to pick out their favorite new word they learned with their mentors this year. They then created a “gallery” page of its meaning and drew a picture to go with it. After they finished their page, they went around the room showing their page to each student and explaining what their word was and its definition. They had so much fun and were so engaged in this activity.

This week in HOSTS we are reviewing all of our pocket #2 activities. Today, the students had Build-A-Word Battles to see who could build the most real words by adding prefixes & suffixes to a base word. Next, they were able to play a skill game with a partner.

This year our HOSTS mentors had the opportunity to read a poem to their students and I have to say, this was such a special moment for everyone. ❤️

Today, the HOSTS students enjoyed another “Flashlight Friday” while reading with their mentors. They also added some fabulous words to their Word Collector journals ie: garderobe, vast, nibbled, fragile, gazed, vaguely, extinct, apex, ecosystem, lioness, elegant, spiral, adobe, & twirl. Wow! That is a lot of new words.

Our students are set to engage in mentor-guided conversations about their texts this week and next. The mentor-student discussions have been so enjoyable to hear. We updated our Word Collector Journals with new words like 'bellow', 'culprit', 'latch', 'knocker', 'despair', 'ravenous', and 'deputy'.

Wow! We have the best HOSTS mentors. As of today, I have filled an entire 2 gallon bag with over 100 pairs of eclipse glasses. These glasses will be sent to students in Latin America for their total eclipse on August 8

This week & next week the students will be focusing on synthesizing while reading. Synthesizing is when your thinking changes as you read, a sort of “lightbulb” moment.

Please don’t throw away your eclipse glasses after Monday. I will gladly take them and send them to Africa for their eclipse in August. See info below:

The Total Solar Eclipse is Monday April 8th! Don't toss your viewing glasses! You can donate them to be used at the South American Eclipse in August.

Remember to view the eclipse with protective eyewear!

Just a reminder, all M.S.D. of Wayne Township Schools are closed Monday, April 8th due to the eclipse. Here are just a few of our mentors modeling their solar eclipse glasses they received this week courtesy of Schmitt & Associates and the Wayne Township Education Foundation.

It’s like we never even left. HOSTS picked up right were we left off. The students and their mentors are having great conversations when the students are summarizing their text. Plus, we’re adding more interesting words to our Word Collector Journals ie: iridescent, extraordinary, and potluck.

This week, all of our HOSTS mentors will be receiving a pair of solar eclipse glasses during your HOSTS session. The students are getting very excited about the eclipse. Our poem is pretty cool too this week. Plus, we have a fun fiction article the students can choose to read with their mentors as well about a class preparing for an eclipse.
