Quick update

We wanted to take a moment to update you on a few things. Unfortunately, we've been facing supply chain shortages due to recent hurricanes—particularly with organic green cabbage. While we do our best to keep all your favorite ferments in stock (because we genuinely hate disappointing our customers!), we may experience temporary shortages of kimchi and curtido in your preferred sizes over the next couple of weeks.

But don’t worry—it’s the perfect opportunity to explore something new! Why not try our radish kimchi or a different sauerkraut flavor? As always, our online inventory will be updated regularly, so if you need something, we recommend buying in advance. Links to shop are below!

We are still operating as usual, but please note that we'll close early this Friday at 3 PM. You can find us during regular hours or at the market on Saturday. And if the market or weekday visits are tricky, Sundays are a great time to swing by our Palmetto Bay store—traffic is light, and stocked items will be available!

It's gonna get cooler, right?

As the nights get cooler and the days grow shorter, it’s the perfect time to plant edible veggies and herbs in the garden. We all hope for cooler weather after such a long, sweltering summer. It’s also the peak of hurricane season, and while we’ve been fortunate this year, our thoughts are with everyone impacted by Hurricane Helene.

One thing I appreciate about the Legion Park Farmers Market is its dedication to supporting local farms and produce. Before I started this business, I had no idea about our unique growing season. Like many people, I planted things at the wrong time and had countless gardening failures. Big-box stores like Home Depot sell plants that aren’t suited for our climate year-round. It wasn’t until I connected with Little River Cooperative (https://www.littlerivercooperative.com/?srsltid=AfmBOopQhjQes3Lt70fZeO-BiY3AchPBSnF81785UJZAvZIT3mtz6NyG) that I learned so much about when and what to plant. Their starter plants have made all the difference in my garden’s success. I’m excited that, starting in November, they’ll be at the market along with other local farms, offering plants and produce.

What makes our ferments so delicious is our fresh, home-grown ingredients—things you won’t find commercially available. We grow them right in our garden, including lemongrass, tulsi, several varieties of oregano, scallions, moringa, papaya, butterfly pea flowers, and shiso. These unique, vibrant ingredients add a special touch to our ferments.

Understanding our growing season has opened my eyes to how many out-of-season and non-local crops are sold year-round at other markets. While supporting a local business is still great, buying from local farms is the most sustainable option. It strengthens our local agriculture, which is even more critical in times of uncertainty like natural disasters and pandemics.

On another note, we are completely sold out of pickles! But don’t worry—cucumber season starts again in November, and we hope to have a fresh batch ready by December! We will have some fresh half-sours for you!

Find us this weekend

This week, we're brewing fresh batches of some of our most popular flavors! While we offer about ten varieties, we bring four unique ones to the market each time. At our Palmetto Bay hub, where all our ferments are crafted and aged, you can enjoy up to 8 flavors on tap at once. We're excited to share Pineapple Passion + Spirulina this week at the market! We are also working on new labels for our retail bottles.

Legion Park Update: We attended the meeting last week with other vendors for an update on Legion Park. Big news: parking has been secured (huge thanks to Art from Urban Oasis Project, our local food hero!). The community center is set to be completed by the end of October, with doors opening in early November. The City of Miami and the Parks Department are actively addressing electrical improvements. As for parking, street parking is approved on 64th Terrace, 64th Street, and 7th Avenue, with no towing or fees! To accommodate the crowds, entry is now only through the main gate off Biscayne and 66th and along the water via 64th Terrace.

Ginger Beer is Back at Legion Park!

We're thrilled to reintroduce our beloved Ginger Beer at Legion Park Farmers Market this week! Our Ginger Beer isn't like anything you'll find on store shelves. It's not kombucha, it's not beer, and it's not designed to be an alcoholic beverage either. Instead, it's a naturally fermented ginger "soda" crafted from a unique culture we created in-house called a "ginger bug."

Made with organic ginger, filtered water, and cane sugar, this culture is nurtured like a sourdough starter—fed daily until it comes alive. We've been caring for our ginger bug since 2019, and it's still going strong! Our Ginger Beer is caffeine-free, contains live cultures, and is far less sweet than commercial brands because the sugar is consumed so quickly during fermentation..But, our market is also facing some challenges.

You may have heard that Legion Park's main parking lot is closed for renovations, which is expected to last about a month. Urban Oasis Project, the organization behind the market, is working to secure alternative parking options by connecting with the community and surrounding properties.

Since the pandemic, we've experienced reduced support from the Parks Department and the City of Miami. The market has faced several challenges, from limited bathroom access due to prolonged construction to unresolved electrical issues. With parking now restricted, we anticipate confusion and access problems for our customers.

This Thursday, 9/18, we will close our store an hour early to attend a community meeting to discuss these construction updates. Legion Park Farmers Market holds a special place in our hearts. It helps to grow small farms and businesses and brings together people who support local each week. We wanted to send a quick update to let you know we're open today in Palmetto Bay until 2 PM!

We also have some important news about our favorite market at Legion Park. We’ve just been informed that the main parking lot will be closed for a month for resurfacing and upgrades. This is a surprise since the parking lot didn’t need any major renovations.

Over the past 2–3 years, we've faced several market challenges, including a lack of accessible or functional bathrooms, running water, and no electricity (broken and in disrepair). We’ve had to get creative with bathroom solutions, and vendors who rely on equipment have had to find ways to make things work. Despite all this, the market has continued to thrive and has become a significant part of our business—accounting for at least 80% of our revenue.

Now, with the parking lot closure, this feels like another hurdle that could impact the market's future. Fortunately, there’s a chance for our voices to be heard. The Urban Oasis project has captured the attention of community leaders, and a meeting is scheduled for this Thursday at 6 PM to discuss the market's future.

After 9 years, it's still our favorite market!

Last week, we faced the daunting forecast of terrible weather on Saturday, leaving us uncertain about attending the Legion Park Farmer's Market (https://g.co/kgs/iHBi5Yn) . The weather in Cutler Bay was stormy, with winds strong enough to send tents flying like a scene from The Wizard of Oz! Despite the challenging conditions, we made the decision to go—and so did you! The weather held out, and we are incredibly grateful and humbled by the number of you who came out to support all the vendors who took a chance. Your presence means the world to us. There’s something truly special about this market and the community it fosters. No wonder it’s the one market and event we hold close to our hearts.

If you haven’t visited yet, the market is a true gem. It offers an abundance of locally grown produce, allowing you to meet the farmers who grow your food and the artisans who craft the items for sale. You can enjoy free yoga beneath majestic oak trees draped in Spanish moss, bring your dogs to play in a designated area, or even spread out a blanket for a relaxing picnic. Without a doubt, it’s our favorite market in all of Miami.

Our new flavor, Pineapple Passion Fruit + Spirulina, was a big hit; we sold out! We have so many flavors to offer, so we won't be bringing this on tap this weekend, but you could pre-order it for pickup or pass by our Taproom (https://maps.app.goo.gl/Pi6QR4sYRG8L9qDS8?g_st=com.google.maps.preview.copy) to fill your growler. New flavor and big jars back in stock!

We’re excited to share some delicious updates from our kitchen! Over the past few weeks, we’ve been busy crafting each batch of our beloved sauerkraut. We’ve also replenished our big jars, double the size of our 16 oz jars, and just $6 more. These bigger jars have been flying off the shelves as more people fall in love with our flavors and seek great deals. However, we only bring one of each variety to the market, so we strongly encourage pre-ordering online!

While we don’t offer coupons, we’re committed to keeping our prices low and providing volume discounts whenever possible. Our prices remain some of the best compared to other producers!

We’re also thrilled to introduce a new and exciting kombucha flavor: Pineapple Passion Fruit with Blue Spirulina! This refreshing blend includes fresh pineapple (rind and all we use to make tepache, another probiotic delight) and the core, rich in bromelain, an enzyme that helps reduce inflammation. Blue spirulina, a powerful antioxidant, adds an extra nutritional punch by helping to reduce blood pressure and cholesterol. This unique flavor is likely seasonal or temporary, so savor it while you can!

And for our natto lovers, we continue producing our signature “neba neba” natto. Though our weekly batches are limited to around 6 jars due to the time-consuming and meticulous process, we believe in the incredible health benefits it offers and are dedicated to keeping it available for you.

We're open in Palmetto Bay this week but will close at 2 PM on July 4th in observance of Independence Day. Visit us during our regular hours to stock up on BBQ essentials. We have many items perfect for enjoying yourself or sharing at a gathering. Our Kombucha and Ginger Beer are great refreshing options for those who prefer non-alcoholic beverages. If you enjoy cocktails, try my favorite summertime drink: ginger beer, tequila, and lime for a refreshing ginger-rita. We also offer sauerkraut, pickles, and hot sauce to complement any dish. My favorite is the Smoky Mustard Kraut, which is excellent on hot dogs and burgers. It's a simple and delicious way to add fermented foods to your diet, aiding digestion significantly when our eating habits change.
