**Do Use Your Platforms to Uplift and Support LGBTQ+ People Year-round**
The people who hate us don’t stop July 1. Make sure your support of us doesn’t end then either.

And finally…

**Do Listen to Us about How We Want to Be Supported**
Lists like these can be overwhelming, but that’s not an excuse not to try! When it comes to issues of s*xuality and gender, nobody is born an expert, and with the state of s*x education in this country, most of us have had to teach ourselves. As a result, we tend to be understanding that everyone is learning. We recognize good faith efforts when we see it, and we also know when the effort definitely isn’t.

So: consult the many resources available. Not every q***r or trans person in your life or at your company has the capacity to educate you, but for those who give you permission, ask them what they would like to see.

And then…follow through!

**Do Employ Q***r & Trans People**
This should be an obvious one, but if you don’t have anyone from the community in “the room” where branding decisions are being made, your room is missing important voices! And don’t bring them in just to discuss Pride Month.

And, if you’re creating a new product for the season, Do Uplift Q***r & Trans Creators

**Do Make Sure Your Pride Merchandise Makes Sense**
Don’t just slap a rainbow on something and call it a day. Related to the previous rule: make sure there are folks from the culture(s) in the room!

**Do Celebrate Q***r Joy and Trans Joy!**
It’s a scary time, but Pride is ultimately a celebration. Acknowledge the hardships we face, but make sure you take some time to uplift joy!

Last year, I wrote a list of Tips for Authentic Pride Marketing, based on 5 years as a marketer and (now) 35 years as a q***r person. A year later, the stats show we still need each and everyone of you to continue to stand up for us.

Here are my first three tips for brands this month.

**Do Make a Pride Statement**
Don’t let “not wanting to get it wrong” keep you from making any statement at all. And for the love of everything, do not back off when you get hate-filled pushback (I’m looking at you, Target).

**Do Acknowledge the Emergency**
The community is under attack. It’s necessary to say more than “love is love” or “be kind.” And while we’re at it, please make sure you mention that Pride is LGBTQIA+ specific. We love our allies, but “Pride is for Everyone” can feel evasive.

Remember: Pride was born out of a need to fight back against oppression at Stonewall. We’re still fighting, and we need your help.

**Do Publicly and Financially Fight against the Onslaught of State-level Anti-trans and Anti-gay Legislation**
We’ve all seen corporations that make their logo rainbow in June but support politicians or lobby for laws that actively harm these communities. Evaluate your own practices and make sure you’re putting your money where your graphic design is.

Today is Juneteenth. If you're anything like me, you didn't hear about Juneteenth until you were embarrassingly old. While it's now been a federal holiday for 3 years, many of us are still learning about its roots and meaning to the Black community.

I started off with a bang, enjoying a Pflag Westminster - Carroll County "Pride Walk" and time with my very Open & Affirming friends & church.

But sadly, we as a community are still under attack (especially our trans and POC members), and we still need your help.

I'll be updating and resharing my Pride Marketing Tips from last year, but first, a reminder: Pride isn't about marketing or sales or even sequins although I really love sequins.

When I started this company, I thought I knew a lot about social media marketing. But I've learned so much in the past 5 years! Here are my top 3 lessons:

1) Every person is a brand and every brand is personal. Brand accounts too often are divorced from the people behind it, focusing too much on selling and not enough on building community. Allowing some of your self to enter the brand will lend that authenticity you need to establish your expertise!

2) Social media goals are not the same as sales goals! Social media is about building relationships and communicating with potential customers. But a social strategy can't replace a strong business plan, quality product/service, or excellent customer service!

3) Posting is nothing without a strategy. It can be too easy to skip goal setting, key messages, content pillars, KPIs, etc. But without it, you're just shouting into the ether. That's why I bring all my new clients through a one-month discovery process before we write a single post.

Recently, I've started going to an office every weekday and they are closed today (but open tomorrow!). I'm curious how widespread this is because I never remember getting Good Friday off until like 4-5 years ago.

I don't think there's been a time I disagreed with Meta's choices more, and that's coming from someone who deals with Business Suite fora living.

Sometime last week, they apparently logged everyone out of their Instagram and added a new setting limiting content deemed to be p0litica1.

As someone who values social media's ability to shine a spotlight on marginalized communities and important issues, I find this move not only indefensible but ineffective. More effective moderation and rooting out of misinformation would be the way to create a safe community for everyone.

Even if politics is "not your thing," I highly recommend you change the setting back to "don't limit." Thank you for posting this how-to guide.

It's Women's History Month! ? One of the first-ever social media networks, called Echo NYC, was invented by Stacy Horn. And it's still around!

In fact, almost none of what we do online would be possible without women. From programming (Ada Lovelace), debugging (Grace Hopper) to the algorithm that makes the Internet possible (Radia Perlman), I stand on the shoulders of giants whenever I help small businesses grow online or scroll through reels at 3 AM when I should be asleep. 🙂
