5 Simple Tips to Avoid Getting a Ticket

I’m sure many of you have been stopped by a police officer at some point and may have even received a citation. Here are five tips to help you avoid getting a ticket:

Stay Calm and Polite: Don’t pull out your phone as the officer approaches; this can put them on edge. Instead, smile and be polite. Listen to what the officer has to say before asking questions like, “What did you pull me over for?” Remember that officers are recording as well.

Don’t Admit Fault: We often hear don't admit that you were speeding or committing any infraction because that could be used against you in court. Many people simply pay the fine and move on, but your attitude can influence the outcome. Officers have discretion, and apologizing might go further than you think.

Keep Your Documents Updated: Ensure your driver’s license and address are up to date. Using cruise control and paying extra attention in school zones can help you avoid tickets, as officers tend to issue citations more frequently in these areas.

Be Mindful of Lane Usage: Avoid using the passing lane unless you are actually passing another vehicle. This lane is monitored more closely due to higher speeds and easy access for police.

Stay Respectful: Remember that officers are also members of your community. Kindness and respect go a long way. Even if you receive a ticket, many states offer deferred adjudication programs where you can pay a fine and avoid having the ticket on your record.

Realize that receiving a ticket isn’t the end of the road. Most of us have violated traffic laws at some point without getting caught.
