*form a deep familial bond with their cohort members and create meaningful relationships with the faculty, the staff, and the university community;

*engage in personal growth, self-empowerment, and development of purpose as they begin to actualize the unique contributions they will make to society;

The Voyager Scholarship 17/05/2022

We are so excited to learn of this new scholarship supporting rising juniors and community college transfers to four year insitutions who are committed to public service.

Students will receive up to $25,000 per year in “last dollar” financial aid for their junior and senior years of college. This financial aid should alleviate the burden of college debt so that students can afford to pursue a career in public service.

Let's be real: the type of students who excel in the Alfie Scholars Program at Seattle University have a hunger for knowledge and want to use their experiences to shape a better world.
One way we help our scholars do that is through an intensive summer program that focuses on academic skills such as writing and presenting. The summer program also focuses on the whole person and fosters a community among the Alfie Scholars.
While writing an academic paper during your summer may sound like a lot, you'll have an entire team of advisors to support you. And did we mention the $15,000 per year scholarship distributed over two years?

From financial challenges to feeling like you belong on a university campus, being a transfer student is tough!
We asked some of our scholars to share their advice on how to apply for and succeed in the Alfie Scholars program at Seattle University. Although the application process may seem like a lot of work, the scholars encourage applicants to reach out to others and ask for help from peers, professors, and even our Program Director.
The application essays inspire reflection and a realization that this is so much more than a scholarship. The program provides collaboration and connection with fellow scholars and students, making transferring to a four-year university much easier.

“Not only has the Alfie Scholars program been a financial support, but it also helped me understand how to navigate this school and the expectations of the school. And it's made private school feel more like a place where everyone can belong and find their spot.”

“I was very scared that I wouldn’t be able to fit into a new school. Within the Alfie Scholars cohort that I’m in, I felt that I could truly be myself and all of my identities.” Mashaal Shameem, a global business and accounting major at Seattle University, describes how the Alfie Scholars program helped her confidently share her many identities: “So whether I was bilingual, kind of an international student technically studying abroad or whether it was based on the values that I held dear and my own faith and how that would blend together, and how I'd be able to communicate that with other people… when I came into the Alfie Scholars they definitely were very supportive of all the parts of my identity and I felt very, very welcome.”

The Alfie Scholars program application is no joke, and neither are our scholars’ visions for making positive change in the world!

“It is my uniqueness that is being celebrated; it's not me trying to fit in with every single other student that I read about on the Alfie Scholars website.” – Chelsea Arnold, Forensic and Clinical Psychology 2022

24/04/2022

“It was the paper on incivility that we were asked to read and respond to in the application that was really inspiring, because it talked about incivility in society and how that really degrades humans and just creates this toxic environment for people to live in. I was amazed to find there are people who care about this issue.”
Yao Yao, Computer Science, 2022

“I told myself that I am the type of student that gives their all, and if I were to be given this opportunity, I would continue to do that.”
Lia Matias Matos, Business Administration, Management, 2023

23/04/2022

“Knowing that there is a cohort of students with a shared vision like me, even though we have different specific objectives in our lives and careers, I just knew that it would push me to also keep being my better self and become something I potentially wouldn't even know to expect in my own future.”
Abem Fekade-Tessema, Business Economics, 2022

Chelsea always knew she wanted to attend Seattle University but hadn’t really contemplated how pay for her tuition. She also knew that she wanted to feel a sense of belonging and purpose on campus.
Are you considering the Alfie Scholars Program at Seattle University? We asked some of our scholars to share how they knew they were the type of student who should apply.
Mashaal knew right away that the program was for her, thanks to her passion for research and social justice issues. As a transfer student, she was also looking for community as she completed her bachelor’s degree.
At first, Phanghouy felt overwhelmed by the essays required for the application process, but she quickly realized that by reflecting on her own lived experiences, she had exactly what she needed to create a compelling application.
Bokyung thought that Seattle University was out of reach. Thanks to the Alfie Scholars program and Seattle University’s mission of educating the whole person, she realized that receiving her bachelor’s degree, with a rich campus experience, was available.
We’re looking for students who want to be change-makers and have a positive impact on their community. Learn more and apply at alfiescholars.org/apply.

“As a transfer student I was really looking for community, and when I looked at the Alfie Scholars and saw what they stood for and the values that they were trying to instill, I thought that was something really special that I wanted to be a part of.”
Mashaal Shameem, Global Business and Accounting, 2023

22/04/2022

“When I saw the website of Seattle U. and their mission of educating the whole person, I really liked the idea. I think many public schools might not have those goals or missions and I was like, ‘Oh it's a very small school; it's a private school; and I could educate myself through this school that has a mission like this.’ I also connected to the Alfie Scholars program which is about social justice.”
Bokyung Kim, Finance and Marketing, 2023

“If you know a student or a teacher or an advisor, somebody who can boost your confidence and talk to you about a particular application or something you're interested in, I think I would encourage that; it’s something that helped me.”
Afrikaan Sahra, Computer Science 2022

“So the doubts that I had were English; I mean English is my fifth language and I had a very difficult time. It was scary in terms of I had to write multiple papers and read a paper and then do a deep reflection on it, write about my leadership skill and I even didn't know if that was something that I could talk about or people would relate to talking about my leadership skill in the refugee camp where I lived, so I didn't know if my story was relevant.”

Computer science major Afrikaan Sahra describes the doubts he had about applying for the Alfie Scholars program at Seattle University. “I also didn't know if my English would be delivered in a way that that would make me be selected. The circumstance that I was in made me, pushed me to do it, first of all, you know. Getting connected to people and asking them questions like that you know, if you know a student or a teacher or an advisor somebody who can boost your confidence and talk to you about a particular application or something you're interested in I think I would encourage that which is really nice so that's also something that helped me.”
