Seven officers and a K9 were injured in a crash with suspects from a drive-by shooting as they fled from officers. All the officers and the K9 are currently at local hospitals and expected to recover. The suspects were also transported with nonlife-threatening injuries.

Today, July 19, 2024, just before 1:00pm, SWAT and K9 officers had just cleared a call looking for a suspect with a warrant when the K9 officer saw a suspect vehicle from a recent drive-by shooting. The K9 officer attempted to stop the vehicle but they fled. Due to the severity of the original crime, officers initiated a pursuit. Officers in an armored vehicle moved in to assist as the suspects fled in to a residential neighborhood. As the suspects fled eastbound on Carlisle, the armored vehicle was approaching southbound on Oak and the two vehicles crashed in the intersection. The K9 vehicle that was pursuing the suspect car then crashed into the suspect car as well. The attached link provides footage of the crash.

Three suspects were taken into custody without further incident and were transported to an area hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. The K9 was taken to a local vet while the officers were all transported to the hospital after the scene was made safe. A civilian car was northbound on Oak, saw the oncoming armored vehicle with lights and sirens on, pulled over, and narrowly escaped the collision. Everyone involved is expected to recover from their injuries. Fortunately, no one else was injured as a result of the suspects’ actions.

“This particular incident highlights the challenges our patrol officers are up against every day with the number of shootings they investigate and the behavior of the suspects, not only while committing these violent crimes, but the great lengths they’ll go to escape. It puts the community at risk,” said Chief Justin Lundgren.

Drive By Shooting Arrest
SPD arrests two teenagers for drive-by shooting after shots were fired at busy park Last night – 4/30/24, Spokane Police officers responded to reports of a shooting at Chief Garry Park on Sinto Ave. around 5:30pm. Officers arrived to find a park busy with people gathered for baseball games and otherwise. Multiple witnesses on scene were helpful in providing information about, and pictures of, what happened. Officers learned that an argument involving a number of young people took place near the southwest part of the park. A car pulled up with two males who exited the vehicle and headed toward where the argument was heard. Shots were fired and the males from the vehicle returned to it and drove away. Shell casings were located in the grass. Patrol officers were able to determine the registered owner of the car and learned from cooperative parents that their teenage son had the car. Officers located the vehicle at E. Euclid Ave. and N. Crestline St., pinned the car and detained the two males inside the vehicle without incident. At least one firearm was found inside the vehicle. Officers developed probable cause to arrest Hunter T. Simmons (18) and a 17-year old male. Both face charges of Drive-By Shooting. At this point, no shooting victims have been located. Anyone with additional information on this incident who has not already spoken with police is encouraged to call Crime Check at 509-456-2233. Police continue to investigate whether other persons were involved in this incident. With warmer weather, more daylight hours and more people out and about, SPD has increased patrol efforts around our area parks. Park Robbery Arrest
SPD arrests multiple suspects in brazen Downtown daylight robbery On 3-26-24 at 6:24pm, Spokane Police responded to the area of 200 N Wall on a report of a robbery. Upon arriving, officers contacted two victims who had been pepper sprayed while sitting in a vehicle. The victims were an adult male and an adult female and their injuries were consistent with being sprayed with pepper spray or similar chemical agent. The male victim advised he had walked over to retrieve some money from an ATM while the female remained in the car. An unknown male tried to talk with the male victim after he obtained his money. Feeling uneasy, the victim quickly returned to his vehicle and got inside. A group of males chased the victim and pulled open the car door as he tried to close it. The suspects demanded the victims money. A struggle ensued inside the vehicle when one of the suspects sprayed pepper spray, striking both occupants. The victims begged the suspects to stop. Due to the violent actions of the crime, the victim handed over the money and the suspects fled on foot. Officers flooded the area searching for the suspects. A witness advised the suspects were wearing masks and hooded sweatshirts as they ran away. While in the Riverfront Park area, officers observed a group of subjects walking north who matched witness descriptions. Upon seeing the officers, the suspects began throwing items that appeared to be cash and a backpack into the river. Officers quickly detained four suspects with the help of Park Rangers after they ran in different directions. Officers developed probable cause and the following suspects were booked into the Spokane County Jail for 1st Degree Armed Robbery: • Rashaud A. Lightner (26) • Jaeshon W. Farmer (18) • Chase A. Wilson (23) A fourth suspect (a minor) was booked into the Spokane County Juvenile Detention Center for 1st Degree Armed Robbery, Obstruction of a Law Enforcement Officer, and Minor In Possession of liquor.
