Thatching vs Power Raking Vs Aeration. What’s the difference?

We get a lot of people asking about this each year. While every yard is different, we live in a short growing season and treat cool season grasses (mainly Kentucky Bluegrass). Because we live in a short growing season the thatch layer doesn’t have a chance to build up heavily from year to year. Some thatch is healthy and normal for your lawn.

DeThatching: Usually is done with a rake attachment on the front or back of lawn mower to help rake up thatch and dead or dormant grass blades. You can get similar results from mowing and bagging your grass in the early season.

Power Raking: Power Raking is a very aggressive and unnecessary approach. This uses a machine that’s about the same size as a push mower with tines that turn and rip the thatch up from the ground. This method is used to remove thatch when you have a heavy thatch level of more than 3/4 to an inch of thatch.

Aeration: Mechanical aeration is the process of removing core plugs from your lawn, allowing air, water, and nutrients to reach your roots. There are also liquid aeration products that help allow oxygen and water reach the roots easier without having to leave core plugs behind. Mechanical aeration will give you a more aggressive and quicker results than liquid aeration, however both are great options.

If you are trying to get you lawn ready for spring, the best thing you can do is mow short, bag your grass to help clean it up, and run a good fertilizer to bring it out of winter dormancy. Do not DeThatch or Power Rake your lawn if it not dormant, it can actually stress and damage your lawn if it is starting to actively grow.

If you are looking to improve your lawn and have the budget, the best thing you can do between the three service listed above is core aerate and overseed if needed.

We are right in the middle of fall applications. This past summer we have found the w**ds to be a lot worse than normal. State of Idaho has found Kochia (tall tumblew**d that’s difficult to control) round up resistant in 8 out of 9 Southern Idaho counties including Bingham county. 2,4-D is also a non effective herbicide on kochia. This is not the only w**d that is developing resistance in our area.

It is important for homeowners and farmers to be aware of the importance of rotating herbicides to avoid herbicide resistance in target w**ds and to also be aware of cultural methods to control w**ds.

At Spray Tech Solutions, we will be making changes to our herbicides program to help achieve better results and to avoid using products in situations where there could already be resistance.

Glyphosate-Resistant Kochia A University of Idaho-led farm field survey conducted last fall confirmed a troublesome annual w**d, kochia, has developed resistance to glyphosate herbicide in eight of nine southern Idaho counties in which samples were taken.

We get a lot of calls this time of year with yards getting brown spots. No product or fertilizer can replace what good water can do for your lawn. With record hot temperatures this year, most likely your brown areas are from lack of water. Watering longer and less often is better than short daily watering.
