This month’s Community Champion is Joan White. We received multiple nominations for Joan, who in the 1980s, developed lymphedema after a life-threatening surgery, and when she found limited resources for those living with lymphedema in the US, she founded the Lighthouse Lymphedema Network (LLN) in 1993. The LLN is a non-profit organization with the mission of promoting awareness of lymphedema and educating and providing support for lymphedema patients, family and caregivers, the medical community, insurance companies and other lymphedema support groups.

Today, over 30 years later and at the age of 82, Joan remains an active member of Board of Directors of the LLN, having invested thousands of hours on behalf of others. She is known to be a selfless, inspiring and energetic woman who has lived her life to support those with lymphedema and those in the medical community with an interest in lymphedema. As a result of her tireless and impactful volunteer work with the LLN, Joan has become well-known among lymphedema experts, researchers and advocates. Joan has served on the Board of Directors of the National Lymphedema Network (NLN), and has served as a member of the NLN Lymph Science Advocate Program. She was an advocate for the Lymphedema Treatment Act and a delegate at the 2023 LANA Lymphedema Summit.
Joan envisions improving the lives of thousands, yet when she meets or serves even one person, she considers her time well spent. Her ability to see the big picture does not impair her ability to hear each individual. Joan has truly shown “light” on Lymphedema. Thank you Joan for all you have done for the lymphatic community!

Bailey B. R. Maddox is a Certified Lymphedema Therapist who works exclusively with lipedema, lymphedema, and oncology clients. As a passionate advocate for lipedema, she stands out as one of the few massage therapists in the area to have completed advanced lymphatic training. In April 2024, Bailey founded an online group to provide peer-to-peer support for lipedema therapists. She has worked with patients from Hagopian Plastic Surgery in Atlanta, Advance Lipedema Treatment in Beverly Hills, and Lipedema Solutions in St. Louis.

We would like to take a moment to honor the memory of Elizabeth McMahon, PhD, author of Overcoming the Emotional Challenges of Lymphedema (Lymph Notes 2005). She was a featured speaker/instructor at lymphedema meetings including NLN in Nashville (2006) and San Diego (2008) and coauthor of several other lymphedema books.
Elizabeth became interested in lymphedema when her late mother-in-law, Ann Ehrlich, developed lymphedema post breast cancer surgery. Her husband, Chuck Ehrlich, helped form Lymph Notes in 2003 as a website and publishing company. Ann and Elizabeth collaborated on several books including Living Well With Lymphedema (Lymph Notes 2005), Voices of Lymphedema (Lymph Notes 2007), and Lymphedema Caregivers Guide (Lymph Notes 2009). Elizabeth also contributed to the Lymphedema and Lipedema Nutrition Guide (Lymph Notes 2016).
Dr. McMahon worked at Kaiser in Fremont California for more than 30 years providing outpatient psychotherapy, training postdoctoral residents, and developing treatment programs. Following her retirement from Kaiser in 2013, she started a private practice in San Francisco specializing in anxiety issues, including the therapeutic use of Virtual Reality. Liz pioneered the use of VR in anxiety treatment starting in 2010. Her spouse, Chuck Ehrlich, also served on the NLN Board of Directors for a time.
