Life is fragile you guys. For real...

Yesterday everyone in my office was told that a coworker would be out sick. She was going to Urgent Care with some trouble breathing and wasn't feeling well. This morning we came in to the news that she had several heart attacks and emergency surgery last night, and the doctors are not hopeful that she will make it through the day.

I know that everyone probably scrolls right by when I post about what I do, but seriously y'all. Our lives can be turned upside down at any moment, and you do not want to leave your family unprepared and wondering what they're going to do, if the worst does happen. Don't leave them financial worry on top of overwhelming grief.

My heart is heavy today. Please pray for this beautiful soul and for peace for her family, whatever the outcome. Her name is Kim.

Life Insurance Myth:

“I already have Life Insurance through my Employer. I don’t need any more coverage.”

The Truth:

Even though you may have a policy provided by your Employer, here’s a few reasons why you need a supplemental policy:

1. You do not own your Employer provided policy. If your employment were to be terminated for ANY reason, you would lose your coverage, regardless of how much you have paid into it. Your employer is the Primary owner on the policy, and coverage would be terminated if employment ends.

2. If the benefit on an Employer owned policy is paid out to your Beneficiaries, only the first $50,000 is tax deferred. This means that your beneficiaries will pay taxes on any payout received over $50,000. Let’s say you have a $150,000 employer owned policy; your beneficiary(s) would owe taxes on $100,000 should they collect that benefit. That is not the case with individually purchased policies. On these policies, the TOTAL benefit is 100% tax-free regardless of the face amount.

3. You CAN have multiple policies, and here’s why you should…your employer owned policy is great “secondary” coverage. These policies are usually very affordable (sometimes free) and there is no reason to not take advantage of the benefits offered by your employer. But it shouldn’t be your sole means of coverage simply because the face amounts provided, generally, are not adequate to cover all of the surviving family’s expenses.
