Student of the Year

Today we honor Luke McGuire, on what would have been his 18th birthday. His mother, Trish, sent us this beautiful tribute written by Luke's Uncle Dan O'Malley.

Shortly after my nephew Luke McGuire’s 8th grade confirmation, he was diagnosed with cancer. I was very sick about the news. How in the hell can a 13 year old be stricken with such a disease.

To have to go through the treatments, mental turmoil and worry as a child made me so angry and sad. I felt awful for him, his mom, his brothers Jack and Mick, his Dad, who would all have to watch their son, brother, and buddy go through so many struggles. Luke had to be scared, but we often didn’t see it on the outside, he fought the fight with pure courage, positive attitude, and an appreciation for those around him, and was in remission by the end of the summer. We were all so proud of him and happy for him ( and ourselves).

Then the Cancer Came Back a few months later. This time he was informed his cancer had spread. Needless to say he was disappointed, shocked, and I am sure quite scared. His whole family ( mom, dad, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends) were so disheartened and sad. But Luke quickly got up and started the fight yet again vowing to beat cancer. Letting everyone know that he would be ok. His family, and community rallied around him, and he started the fight again. This time the cancer was too widespread and after a 9 month battle Luke went to heaven.

Luke to this day is the best person I have ever met. Cancer took him too early, but if I could model my life around how to live with the proper perspective. I would just look to Luke as an example.
Luke was full of love, and while his life was short, he touched many lives. I only wish we could have seen him grow into the body of the Man he had become.

Losing a child/nephew to Cancer is absolutely awful. While I still get sad, I try and keep Luke alive in my mind and my heart every day and it truly does help me keep perspective on what is important. Family, Friends, Living life to the fullest, Collecting memories instead of “stuff, and Mostly trying to be a better human being ( ie put others first). I love and miss Luke, but he has left his mark on the world that has positively changed the trajectory of many lives. Especially mine.
