Tonight’s High Showcase Tryouts have been Postponed. Tryout #1 will now be next Saturday February 24 6pm, and Tryout #2 will be March 2 6pm.
UPSL was in the Phoenix area for a 3-game Preseason stint this past weekend. Cal State Prep traveled with over 30 players, including players as young as Hero Yang, a 14-year-old out of the Fresno Area. “I learned a lot on this trip,” said Hero Yang, Midfielder/Forward, at Cal State Prep Academy.
“Our first 2 matches this weekend we were able to get all 30+ traveling players quality time to be evaluated at that level,” said Director and UPSL Head Coach Steven Vargas.
In Cal State Prep UPSL’s final game of the weekend, they took on a Barca Residency UPSL side that has run the MLS Next, EA, and other Southwest divisions.
From the first whistle, Cal State Prep came out with their trademark Press and Counter press style forcing speed of play. In the second minute, Barca was able to put an early chance away off a turnover in the defensive third and a quick cross to an open runner in the box. “The first goal we gave up Sunday, we were just straight lacking focus. That can’t happen at this level, but something that can happen is a team regroups, sticks to its game, and gets back on the front foot and that’s exactly what happened,” added Bryan Lopez, Forward, Cal State Prep Academy and scorer of Sundays 2 goals.
After giving up the early goal, Cal State Prep settled into the match and by the 14 minute was able to get one back on an assist by Fernando Ambriz to scorer Bryan Lopez as he placed a shot over Barca’s keeper.
With the game level Cal State Prep’s intensity was evident and caused problems for Barca’s style of play. “We have a deliberate style and our group and attack feed off of that,” said Coach Steve Vargas.
Cal State Prep finally had their moment where they broke the tie in the 53 minute when again Bryan Lopez finished a shot around the keeper off an assist for Josh Aguirre, Forward/Midfielder, for Cal State Prep.
With the game winding down Barca was able to get a goal in the 87th to draw level.
After a few more opportunities by both sides, the game whistle blew for a full-time result of 2-2. “This game today especially taught me so much, levels of play, speed of play. Our coach had us ready and we performed!” finished Ventura.
