DON'T UNDERESTIMATE VOLUME. We went back through on a mix today, and was finishing for the artist. Instead of reaching for the compressors, we went back to the basics. Brushing it up with eq, and doing some automation. Volume automation and the song sprang to life!!!! sometimes it's the small things we overlook, and end up overdoing.
What I am saying whether you have stock plugins, hardware, or no hardware, the balance and the use of the tools you have are what matter, stay confident and believe that your making the right choice, if it feels right. It's OK to not agree. You can always go back and redo it. Do what you feel like it should sound, but maybe don't reach for the eq, and compression until you hear it in context with volume
