I work with “confused” drivers all the time. It’s actually my job to tell them whether they are safe or not to be on the road.
If you can imagine, this leads to some very uncomfortable conversations, but they have to be had.
If you know someone who is a “confused” driver (usually someone who is aging or disabled in some way), and you believe that they are not safe to be on the road anymore, I can have that conversation on your behalf.
Tell me your story in the comments and I’ll do my best to support you.
One surprising thing that has helped me the most when it comes to uninformed caregiving has nothing to do with how to adapt a home for aging in place.
Instead, it’s about 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗲𝘁. This became critical during the COVID pandemic
"I have the opportunity to make a difference in the life of a vulnerable elder"
(That's an example of a positive mindset. Because the control is yours)
" I hate my life. I didn't sign up for this!"
(That's an example of a negative mindset. You feel like a victim. As if you don't have choices)
𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗶𝘁?
Whatever you are thinking, it’s all just thoughts.
𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱.
TBH I had no idea this one thing would make such a huge difference for me but here it is:
I started nurturing myself more
I found a way to exercise at home
I learned how to use Zoom to connect with others
I started to meditate using free content on YouTube
I started to write out my ideas about remote caregiver training
I brainstormed ways that would be helpful for caregivers who were UN trained
Every time I took a breather I said this affirmation “ 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻.
𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲. 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗺”
Yep. That’s it. Nothing earth shattering. No HUGE change to my lifestyle.
𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝘆 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱
That one simple switch has made all the difference
It reminded me to keep things in perspective.

It's great to see what others are doing, thinking and feel
🧠 One surprising thing that might help you the most with caregiving isn’t about home adaptations—it’s your 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗲𝘁.
During challenging times, the thoughts you choose can make all the difference: ✨ "I have the opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life." VS. 💔 "I didn’t sign up for this. I feel trapped."
When you shift your mindset, you shift your reality. This isn’t just positive thinking—it’s about reclaiming control and finding gratitude, even in tough moments.
Need support to navigate caregiving with more ease and confidence? My 1:1 coaching is here to help you transform your caregiving journey. 💪

Have you ever heard of the Americans With Disabilities Act?
It's been 34 years since it was implemented in 1990
In case you haven't thought about it, it's been working for everyone's benefit ever since then.
You've noticed the braille dots on public signage, like in elevators.
You've noticed the HP parking spots at the grocery store designated by signs or symbols
You've noticed the extra large stalls in public bathrooms
And sign language interpreters up front during speeches
The ramps making public buildings accessible
The lowered counters at a help desk for those seated in wheelchairs
The ADA doesn't directly apply to private homes or to really small businesses.
But it has definitely influenced us to be aware of 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝗹.
Would you park in a HP designated space without a placard?

$$ Let's talk about finances baby $$
When did you first notice that your Loved One was having trouble with managing money?
As a caregiver, have you taken a look at that at all?
Maybe not...
Some feel money matters are too personal and private for anyone else to ever look at.
One tell tale sign of money management difficulty is a decline in someone's 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲.
Why?
They begin to miss payments for credit accounts which then lowers the credit score.
"𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗯𝗲 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 "𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀".
Did you know that if someone has dementia their chances of 𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗺 𝗶𝘀 100%?
That's from a study published in the Elder Law Journal.
Double check your Loved One's financial accuracy. Find their credit score and history.
Be aware. It might be time to get involved in that part of their routine.
