One of the people I am helping learn to make a costume is working on this set of garments for an 1812 regency ball in June. So far she has the chemise and corset, still to come bodiced petticoat and muslin gown

Often I am asked to replace a zipper, but in many instances I can simply repair them with no sewing!

As long as the teeth are not damaged...and the pin and box at the bottom are not damaged... Anyone can just remove the top stop with some side/wire cutters and slide on a new replacement pull. This repair takes about 5 minutes and the replacement pull and top stop are less than $2

Getting married in 2024? Here's a little info about what to do and expect about the gown alterations.

Now is the time to start looking for gowns and attending bridal expos since the newest designs are here .. and the expos are a good way to see them and all kinds of other wedding related service businesses. They are fun, and there are always discounts and free give aways.

Keep in mind when choosing a gown, if the store orders one for you it takes the factory making it several weeks or months to do this. Plan ahead. If you think you would like to have additional lace added to a design in altering the gown ASK WHEN YOU BUY THE DRESS for them to order extra lace to match from the factory. Lace is hard to match and impossible to find at local places. The store can order it directly from the factory for you.

Usually alterations businesses suggest that you plan to have alterations fittings marked and pinned about 6-8 weeks before your wedding. Call early to schedule your appointment as those slots for spring thru fall appointments fill up fast. If a shop is fully booked the only way they will consider squeezing your appointment in is if you are willing to pay a hefty rush fee. Plan ahead to avoid this.

Do not be late to your appointment...even by 5 minutes. Many shops like David's Bridal will ask you to reschedule when you arrive late ..and they won't be nice about it.

Have the shoes you plan to wear with the dress at all fitting appointments. Also bring any foundation garments.... Bra or shapewear... that you plan to wear to every fitting. If you have not been measured for a bra, it would be a good idea to do this before the fitting... At somewhere other than Victoria's secret...

A reputable alterations shop can measure you, or in larger towns there may be specialty stores (think Barbara's in Fort Wayne) who can help you with this. About 80% of all American women do not wear the size bra that they actually should. This can affect how your dress looks at your wedding.

Generally, most alterations can be completed with two to three appointments. It does take between 45 minutes - 1 and 1/2 hours to pin and mark all of the changes. Some shops will charge a fitting fee. Expect the alterations to take the shop between 3 to 16 hours of labor to complete and they will charge you accordingly.

Ask for a quote of typical prices when you schedule your appointment. Almost all bridal alterations technicians will quote you an accurate price at the fitting. If you choose not to move forward with the alterations, expect the technician to remove all of the pins that she has put in the dress.

Usually the shop will include pressing and steaming the dress as a complimentary part of altering the gown, but ask them if there is a charge. Shops will also take in gowns and veils to steam for a fee if they are not being altered. If you are traveling to a destination wedding, you may want to book that service at the destination in advance with a shop there.
