I've been talking about this journey of becoming a yoga therapist, but what does that even mean? There's many applications for yoga therapy, but for me, what stands out the most is how we can apply it to mental health.

Having a specific protocol as a go-to for your specific needs to help drown out all the other noise, avoiding analysis paralysis and overwhelm can be the difference between calm and freaking out.

When you notice the elevation in heart rate, shortness of breath, racing thoughts, and when everything is so loud...you open up your metaphorical toolbox that helps to slow it all down, and have a chance to stop it in its tracks. I will help guide you to the tools you have within you all of the time.

Comment "WAITLIST" to learn more about the upcoming 6 week series of yoga therapy for anxiety , give your input on time, pick your price option according to your budget, and be the first to know when sign-up is live next week. We're starting in May and I hope to see you there.

There's so many options, just because one technique didn't work for you doesn't mean you can't meditate. These are some simple accessible techniques to start slowing down your thoughts and focusing your mind to create space.

Give it a shot and explore some different methods. Let me know what you think, and if you've tried any of these 5 techniques or not.

One of my favorite classes to teach. We move and breathe together building some heat, then cooling down with breathwork and meditation and some discussion on karma yoga - how we take the givens in life to liberate us from suffering, and use every situation in our lives as a way to practice yoga.

We'll also pay the practice forward by raising funds for a karma yoga organization supporting compassion creators, empathy energizers, do-gooders and change-makers, bringing yoga to all in its many forms.

Join us from the comfort of your home or in the studio in Massapequa. Share with friends and family who you'd like to join you to kick your Thanksgiving off with gratitude.

Having breathing techniques in your toolbox can be a game changer, even a life changer. Being in tune with my breathing and picking up on subtle changes and knowing what to do to course correct has been a major reason that I have not had a panic attack in the past almost 10 years. It's not that life had gotten easier, with two kids it got harder, but having this tool that is always with me made it manageable.

Because I believe so much in the power of pranayama, I'm offering two free breath work and meditation sessions after my Thursday evening class on October 12th and 19th - with the possibility of more in the future!

You may have heard of half primary series and full primary series, but did you know there are 6 series in Ashtanga Vinyasa? And what even is a series?

Let me know what questions this answered or raised for you! And what series you are practicing.

Through my own practice, the 300 hour apprenticeship and 60 hour primary series course, and continued studies with my teacher we have covered the alignment, anatomy, adjustments, and modfications of the full primary series, intermediate series, and a handful of advanced series poses.

๐Ÿ™ Dive deep into the foundations and full primary series of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga at the upcoming workshop this Saturday 9/23 9:30-12pm in Massapequa.

๐ŸŒŸ It's not about me, it's about YOU.

Let's chat about something important - the things I'll NEVER judge you for as your yoga teacher. Listen till the end for the most important one. These topics matter because they've come up in convos with students and followers here and on my own yoga journey, and I want you to feel comfortable.

Whether it's shaving or not, your nail game, flexibility, weight, knowing all the poses, or even if it's been a while since your last class - know this, you're always welcomed with open arms. No judgment, just show up.

๐Ÿค— Which one resonates with you? Have you ever wondered if yoga teachers cared about these things? Or felt judged about one of these points? Share your thoughts below! Remember, it's your unique journey and efforts on and off the mat are what truly matter.

Should I do a part two? ๐Ÿค”

Photos from Lauren R Yoga's post 09/12/2023

In Ashtanga Yoga, the mat isn't just a piece of rubber- it's your mirror to self-discovery ๐ŸชžIt shows you where you're strong, where you're shaky, where you're holding on, and where you're learning to let go. It's a place to cultivate patience, perseverance, and humility.

But it's more than that.. Your mat is a tool for self-awareness. It's where you notice parallels between your practice and your life, where you spot trends and learn to make shifts. The practice itself remains steady, but you? You evolve. You see how your mood affects your poses, how motivation ebbs and flows, and how your mind can delve into deeper meditative realms.

The structured sequence becomes your anchor. ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™‚๏ธ It levels the playing field, ensuring you don't skip what is more challenging for you or linger in your comfort zone. It's a practice that transforms not just your body, but your entire being.

So, if you haven't tried Ashtanga Yoga yet, consider this your invitation to embark on a journey of self-discovery and transformation.

My partner and daughter were pretty much begging for a dog for a while, I came up with a million reasons why it was not a good time and not a good idea. We had so much we already weren't keeping up with, why should we add a dog?

Finally he mentioned something about a puppy shaped hole in his heart, his family dog had died not too long before, and it sold me. I just knew I couldn't completely understand, because I didn't have my own dog growing up. So... I put my trust in him.

I have come to realize I had a huge gaping puppy sized hole in my heart that I just didn't know was there ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿถ Bon is my girl, my furry daughter my buddy, and she just makes life better. Rather than taking time away she adds to the time that I have. We joke that my puppy hole was even bigger than his ๐Ÿคฃ

This relates to how I feel about sharing yoga - you just don't know until you experience what you have been missing. You can hear all about it, but eventually you need to trust and just try it. There is peace, quiet, and connection and so much more that you may not be able to imagine but just trust me. It doesn't take time, it gives you time.

Now rather than me just sitting here sharing my sappy musings into the void - I'd love to hear from you.... Do you get it? ๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ๐Ÿซถ

3 tips to help you keep your focus and feel less competitive in a yoga class

1 - work on where you're focusing, in down dog pick a point so you're not staring at the people behind you. I've been guilty ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™ˆ but with a focus point you have somewhere to point your attention. Also try this out in balance poses, whether a spot on the wall, the floor, or far away. This should help your balance too!

2- change your mind. Notice the habit, and choose again! Repetition will help you out with this over time, just keep redirecting your attention. Cory Muscara explained it like training a puppy ๐Ÿถ be nice too when you do this ๐Ÿ˜œ

3- come back to your breath, use it as an anchor and a guide. It's hard to keep a steady balanced ujjayi breath while looking around distracted ๐Ÿ‘€ When I'm feeling extra distracted I count the length of each inhale and exhale. Ex. Inhale 1 2 3 exhale 1 2 3

The physical poses are a tool, not the end goal.
A healthy challenge of yourself can be a good thing, but when competition and ego are driving the car so to speak - you can be more likely to get injured, frustrated, and to give up.

I have a lot more to share but it was hard enough fitting this in 90 seconds. I would also love to hear what your experience has been. Give these a try and let me know how it goes.

We all start the same, no matter how long you've been practicing Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga. After sun salutations A and B (check out previous posts) you move on to the fundamental postures.

This repetition of postures allows space for you to explore your body, movement patterns, and the intricate details of each posture. When you are repeating postures it gives you an opportunity to see what has changed - the poses didn't, but perhaps you have.

Once you know the shape of the pose and breath count you have space to turn your attention inward in one direction. This can be helpful in stilling your mind as eventually you don't have to look around the room or guess what's next.

Even though I have been practicing these postures for over 10 years I still continue to learn from them.

Does this sound intriguing or boring? ๐Ÿ˜œ Or something else?

Swipe through for the names of the postures and some pictures of hands-on assists and adjustments.
