Hundreds of artists, school children, and community groups created America’s largest collaborative kolam for the 2021 presidential inauguration in a COVID-safe process.

Shanthi Chandrasekar is the honored next artisan in residence at the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art! Chandrasekar is a multimedia and multidisciplinary artist from Maryland who has been trained in the South Indian traditional art forms of kolam and Tanjore-style painting.
In partnership with the museum, our Center is supporting multiple, free public programs that will invite guests to engage with Chandrasekar. While many of her works are influenced by her Indian heritage, her true inspiration comes from the mystery and majesty of the world around her; her muse lives where the scientific overlaps with the spiritual.
Chandrasekar has won numerous awards for her works, including the Independent Artist Award from the Maryland State Arts Council and the Individual Artist Grant from the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County and from the Maryland Traditions Folklife Apprenticeships. Her artwork is in the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities Art Bank, City of Montgomery Public Art, and other collections.
