Do you ever get an excited or happy feeling when you’ve been told, “job well done”? Imagine how powerful it is when children hear it from their peers and from adults.
Just like adults, kids deserve… and NEED their flowers/ credit/ praise. It boosts confidence and motivation. One of the tricks is to be specific when praising:
Instead of, “Wow, good job!”
Try, “You worked really hard on that puzzle and were able to complete it!”
This type of praise reinforces certain character traits ie. perseverance, grit, healthy habits, etc.
Caveat: While we want to encourage positive character traits, we also want to value kids as they are and meet them where they’re at. Sometimes over praising or praising certain behaviors “leads to kids seeking applause or hiding flaws rather than acting with integrity and authenticity.” (Kennedy-Moore)

There are 3 types of communication: passive, aggresive, and assertive. At Teach Me Tutors, we use assertive communication because we believe in fostering a learning environment where students feel valued and validated. This is a way to boost confidence. Not only do we model assertiveness in our sessions, we also name it so that students see, hear, and understand what it looks like and why it's important.

Did you know that names are words? In fact, it's a common way for Early Childhood Educators to teach phonetic principles. You may even walk into a classroom and notice students' names on the word wall. I know that I always included my students' names on the word wall, even as a math teacher. Emphasizing student names as words and using them to teach phonics not only promotes reading, it also provides a source of validation.
So, in honor of our FIRST Black American National Scripps Spelling Bee winner, today's word of the day is "Zaila." It means might or power in Arabic. While many, if not most names carry a meaning, some names don't have a literal definition/ translation like, "Sha'Carri." But guess what... it's STILL a word. All names are valid and matter.

First and foremost
I am a SUPERHERO! ..and I believe every child is one too.
I started Teach Me Tutors, in 2018 because there was a need. There was a need for excellent educational opportunities provided by excellent, qualified teachers for ALL scholars. Not just some.
Educating is my number one passion in life. I've been an educator for over 10 years so sometimes I feel kind of old!😅
But, my students say I'm fun-loving and relatable, at times haha.
In my free time, I LOVE to travel, dabble in video editing, and indulging in a good fiction novel.
My superpower is my drive to instill confidence, joy, and academic skill, and understanding in my students each and every time.
