This video segment from The Heritage Foundation's 2015 Protect America Month programming features Deep State darling James Mattis speaking about the security state of the world. In this segment, Mattis speaks on Russia’s shrinking population problem being a national security concern where he sees this putting more stress on their ability to maintain their maritime and land borders (the largest in the world), confronting violent jihadists within and crossing their borders, and nuclear security. I intended to post this video segment to paint the problems of population decline among the world superpowers with China also facing a population reckoning with generations of implementing its 'One Child' policy. The United States has been insulated by this problem despite historically low birthrates due in thanks to our attractiveness to immigrants. A permissive immigration policy plays in our favor in our strategic competition and can explain why Russian internet brigades like stoking anti-immigrant sentiment on Facebook and such. In view of a possible impending invasion of Ukraine, this move does add millions of new citizens overnight. Given that it solves this nagging problem, the threat of Russian annexation of territory in eastern Europe is likely going to be a recurring security problem.
