Pandemic Fund Allocates First Grants to Help Countries Be Better Prepared for Future Pandemics
The Pandemic Fund’s Governing Board has approved GRANTS under its first round of funding allocations aimed to boost the resilience to future pandemics in 37 countries across six regions. The selected projects will support projects that strengthen the voice of civil society, promote human rights, and encourage the participation of all groups in democratic processes.
Established in September 2023, and formally launched under Indonesia’s G20 Presidency at the G20 meetings in Bali, Indonesia last November, the Pandemic Fund is the first multilateral financing mechanism dedicated to providing multiyear grants to help low- and middle-income countries become better prepared for future pandemics. The Fund, which is hosted by the World Bank, has already raised $2 billion in seed capital from 25 sovereign and philanthropic contributors.
In keeping with the Pandemic Fund’s mission to catalyze funding and promote coordination, the $338 million of grants awarded will mobilize over $2 billion in additional resources, adding $6 for each $1 coming from the Fund. Many of the projects involve collaboration between countries, UN agencies, and Multilateral Development Banks. In responding to this call for proposals, countries have mobilized civil society and networks of delivery partners. Many of the projects involve cross-border and regional collaboration, a One Health approach— a collaborative approach that combines human, animal, and econsystem health, and considerations for gender and equity.

UN pushes for $1B in funding for Turkish earthquake survivors
The aid is intended for 5.2 million survivors of Turkey's devastating earthquake in modern history
---------------
The United Nations launched a $1 billion appeal Thursday to help 5.2 million survivors of the most devastating earthquake in Turkey’s modern history, two days after starting a $397 million appeal to help nearly 5 million Syrians across the border in the rebel-held northwest.
U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric was peppered with questions about why the appeal for Turkey is targeted at only 5.2 million people when according to the U.N. and the government more than 15 million people were affected. He also was asked why the appeal for Turkey is 2½ times larger than the one for Syria to help almost the same number of people.
He said the Turkish appeal "was designed in very close cooperation with the government of Turkey, which is leading the relief efforts."
Dear friends, I hope you all experience the joy of the festive season.
